I am just about done with the 12 volt conversion on the hotrod. My question is i need a place to install the coil.can i mount on fire wall and if so how do i get a coil wire long enough. Is there a better place to locate the coil.
You can mount the coil anywhere your heart desires. Just remember that you do gain some resistance, and therefore a slight reduction in spark as the wire gets longer, probably not enough to matter. You can buy universal coil wires from any decent speed shop or parts house, even buy it in bulk and make any length you want.
Shorter is better, but you can make up some of the difference with a wire that has a larger core diameter. This does not necessarily mean a 10m racing wire. Many 'racing' wires are bigger in overall diameter due to heavier insulation to help avoid crossfiring and the wires from arcing through to stuff like heads, valve covers etc... Being that you are running a single carb'd V8-60, I doubt that all out performance is your first priority. I think running a coil wire 2ft long will not give you any 'noticable' concerns. Some cars/vans have coil wires about 2ft long from the factory anyway.
My main concern is where too mount.besides the firewall im was thanking of mounting it on the head but im worried about heat. cant see a good safe way to mount it other than the firewall. any other thoughts.
I'd make a bracket to come off of the intake bolts up front. I think we are talking 6V here and you want to reduce any added resistance. Normally I'd say don't sweat it but with 6Vs I'd give it every advantage that I could. It would probably work fine but why add resistance that isn't necessary? The 59A and the 8BA had the coils mounted on brackets bolted on the engine. Heat isn't a major concern. Coils aren't so heavy that they need heavy brackets to support them. Just my thoughts.
Heat isn't that big of a deal. Ford mounted coils to the front of the manifold for years and directly to the front of the cylinder heads. Chevy also mounted them to the manifold. And like someone said, there were plenty of OE applications that had 3 ft coil wires. Don't sweat it for this car.
Taylor makes a coil wire replacement kit.the wire is 36" long and comes with all the hardware for male and female ends.they come in black, red, yellow, blue and purple.let me know if you cant find one,i keep them in stock at the speed shop i work at.
