Yeah...Ford did this with the 255 Indy engines & the 427s for LeMans and NASCAR in the '60s...the next best way to verify engine performance & longevity next to actually being there. It's astounding to look at the dyno "maps" & realize what exactly is happening. Some nice 7700 rpm peaks for the 427, pretty high in those days...,even higher on the Mulsanne Straight. Another cool thing they did (along the same topic) was developing the brake dynos...look at one of THOSE maps & see how much kinetic energy the brakes have to deal with at LeMans on a GT-40....something over 12 million ft.lbs......PER LAP....
