All, Not off a traditional rod but this cleaner may have been used on vehicles. It's an Oaks style air cleaner of of my Willys CJ with the flat head. It was an oil bath with wire gauze to filter air. I'd like to convert it to a paper element. Any ideas on how to go about that? I've tried my FLAPS, but they had no filters that would be close to just fitting in it. TIA!
It looks like you could stack up some of the small filters they use on Rochester Tri-Power setups in there. Maybe roll some perforated steel up to go inside the stack of filters to keep them in line with each other.
There are some small filters made for the inlets of large air compressors that might be about right too -- or stack two or three of those if you need to.
Thanks both, very good ideas. I have a smaller shop vac and a buddy who installs/maintains compressors. I'll certainly give both a try. Would my FLAPS have a few tri power filters you think? Or is that a special order item. Thanks!
it seems to be easy to find those small tripower type air filters at car shows and swap meets. I think I remember that they used to sell them at Kragen's a long time ago to use in some cheap custom air cleaners that "Cal Custom" made for 1 and 2 bbl carbs on smaller cars. I think there was a standard off the shelf Fram replacement for them that was maybe for a VW bug or something, but it used to be easy to find them. Look through the Fram books for old cars like VW bugs from the '60s or old British sports cars, and they all had some pretty small little air filters. The shop vac idea sounds good too.
I'll go back to the NAPA and ask if I can look in their parts books, I honestly have no idea how the air flow would work. Maybe I should just try to make this from PVC/ply? http://www.42fordgpw.com/mods2.html Or like you said a few smaller ones stacked inside some trucker grate or expanded metal. Good question, one that I don't know. Some are HEPA rated, which may be too good clogging off air flow...
Here's how I found one for a rigged up aircleaner I'm making: http://www.knfilters.com/search/universal.aspx
