It has an aluminum intake and is a completly original and stock motor, turns freely and all attached to it generator, fan, belt carb,etc...I paid $800.00 is this a good deal? I am definately looking forward to getting into this motor it is my first flatty. I want to keep it mostly original but would like to add a few performance mods but there are so many options looking for a few good ideas that work .Also if any info out there on these types please feel free to post it all I know is that it is a 49' 239 cu.

did you pull the heads? If not i would do it before getting your hopes up too high. look for dark lines between bolt holes and water p***age ways, and between the valves and cylinders. also having the heads off will give you a better idea of how the motor was running last time it did.
IF you have cracks it isn't a total loss, but can be costly to fix.
Dual carbs, 12 volts, headers/dual exhaust and having the stock heads milled for higher comp. does a lot, and is cheapish.
    good luck!

If your "block heaters" are in the top of the heads, those are the temperature sending units, one has one terminal, the other has two. They were wires in series.
If you're getting it from a local source I'd check it over carefully for cracks, especially between the valve pockets, the water pump mounting surfaces, along the oil pan rails, and around the spark plug holes.
The aluminum manifolds were common on Canadian engines, at least as far as I've seen.
Definitely pop a head and the intake to check your valvetrain and cylinder walls and stroke. Ya never know, you might have some real goodies in there.:D

    Welcome to the flathead fraternity!

Yeah... what they said. Flathead blocks without at least some cracks are fairly difficult to find these days. But as already said, they can be repaired at a cost. So it is to vague of a question on how good a deal ya got without more knowledge. 800 could be a bargain or a rip off depending on what ya have.
