how to remove the lifters in a 307 sbc?? they come out about half an inch then stop. do i need a special tool or is there a cheap but usefull way??
there is a special tool for pulling lifters out but I just use a channel lock or bend the blade of a screwdriver as a hook to pull out
They probably just have some crud and varnish on them. Just use a pair of channel locks and twist them as you pull out on them. Maybe spray some lube around where they go in the block too.
No no need to take them apart.. If stock lifters you can pry/pull straight out.. One in a million chance, could be mushroom tappets, they have a large flat head on the bottom that rides against cam. They must be pushed through into motor after cam is slid out.. There is a small slide hammer tool that grips inside lifter lip to pull stuck ones..
lift them up far enough to slide the cam out then take a cardboard tube with a slot cut out shove it in where you removed the cam and let the lifters fall in it then pull the tube out, this keeps you from scarring the lifter bores in turn loosing oil pressure,307 were known for flat cams mainly why they got a bad rap,the lifters are more than likely cupped. Also you cant pull the cam till you take the mechanical fuel pump off due to the fuel pump rod.
If you are tearing the whole thing down, use a dowel and a hammer from the underside. Sometimes there is some varnish that builds up in the bore, and you can use carb cleaner to help with it.
I have used brake fluid pour some on the lifter and work it up and down till it frees up.This will work if its just a carbon/crud buildup in the bore. And there ain't nuthin wrong with a 307 if you not headed tp Bonneville.
Too many folks bag on the 307- I know it wasn't the greatest engine, but I had one in my '70 Nova and loved it. It had the 2bbl, powerglide, and single exhaust and was a quick, nimble, and quiet as anything... Left alot of fols scratchin' their heads when the light turned green
A bent coat hanger will pull them out. You can also buy a tool for it. Not a bad piece if you plan on building lots of engines.
an old man showed me this trick many many years ago. take an extendable magnet andy any good rust blaster ie w-d40. soray the lifter liberaly and pull up and down on lifter. workes every time the cruddier the engine the longer it takes. studebaker 46
Do what Man-a-free said. If they are cupped with a sharp edge on them you don't want to pull them up through the bores and scatch the lifter bores up. 307's are OK little engines with a small torque cam. Smokey
I pull the stubborn ones up until I can put a hose clamp around it and then pry it out. Works every time. Charlie
Shoot carb cleaner liberally and work em as best you can, then shoot again. Leave em overnight for the gunk ridge to dissolve. Next day they'll twist out with vise grips
