I took the 216 out of my 41 chevy pu and replaced it with a 235 out of a 56 chevy pu my problem is that the mounting flange for the fan pulley and fan is too long by about 1.250 . crank and gen. are ok . What water pump do I need? The rad wont fit like it is now. Many thanks for any help..
check stovebolt.com or tom langdon's website, they've got all the answers you'll ever need. we put a '61 235 in place of a 216 in the '49. did it the difficult way and used the original wide 216 pulleys and had a machine shop put a roll pin in the pulley and shaft after we placed it correctly. then cut off the end of the shaft. also check that the fan, once mounted fully, clears the snout on the crank pulley. you might be able to have the pulley pressed further down the shaft, after checking carefully for clearances. jon
Mount the 235 pump and measure the distance that the water pump pulley is off from the crank pulley. Remove the pump, back up the shaft and press the pulley on more (the amount you measured). Try it again to make sure you did it right and cut / grind off the extra shaft length. Take care when you're cutting, not to get the shaft too hot. Take it sloooooow !
I just replaced the engine in my 51 chevy convertible and i ran into the same problem because i replaced the motor with a later 235 chevy (54-62). so i replaced the water pump with a shorter version from patricksantiquecars.com, i did not have to mess with pressing pulleys or relocating the radiator.
