The "faux gasser" thread got me thinking. What were guys doing back then? Here's a few articles and pics from my stack of 1970 R&Cs. Killer Falcon Ranchero: '47 Nash coupe: '29 A coupe: Bad-ass '57 Ford: '39 Pontiac with a 389 in it:
A few more, from the "Rods and Customs at Random" columns: Aggressive-looking RPU: Raked coupe: I love this tub: '32 Studebaker Rockne: Willys (with '40 Ford headlights): Relaxing at the '70 Street Rod Nats: Aussie tubs--to die for: '32 tub barn-find. In those days those two kids were thinking "Man, what a killer beater this will make!" Today: "Man, we can flip this thing on eBay to some rich guy and make a KILLING!" Either way, it is okay to cry over this one:
Wonder if any of these are accounted for today? The '57 is especially wicked looking. -Lee Atomic Radio www.atomicpinup.com
More from 1970: I like that job on the right: '34, but this time a Plymouth: '32s huddled together overseas: ..and sitting forlornly in California: Wonder where this one is now: Killer '29 RPU:
That is what got me hooked on hot rods, I was reading my Dad's magazines them and that is what I remember. I also remember pulling the axles off of my plastic toy cars and setting the car on other larger wheels pulled off of other cars to get that street freak look as a kid...
I love this pickup, it's bad-ass! HAMB'r Dean Lowe had a thread http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=274041 about his cool old truck, only red, and, I think a 283 (292) sbc. Anyway, I asked if he knew anything about the blue one in TRJ #39......This is the one! Power of the HAMB, right?! Thanks for posting these pics!!
That Ranchero is my next project, that article hangs on my wall and I have all the parts but the body! Yes even the cobra dual quad intake! Dave
Don't encourage me--I got stacks and stacks of this stuff. I love looking through the old mags and coming across all the mind-blowing rods. My DNA was encoded on this stuff--new stuff just doesn't do anything for me. Stay tuned for more if you want it!
Here's the color cover (bottom cropped) of that issue. Love that shade of blue. I'll have to dig out my TRJ39 and check it out.
Since this has gone the way of seventies built rods, I am looking for info or pictures. I did a 29 RPU for a friend 2 years ago. It was built in the 70's with a blown SBC set back, a Push Button Torque Flite and an early Swing axle type Corvette rear. Built n So Cal, it was bright red was supposedly around for a while. This is a picture of it today. I'd love to find a pic of it the way it was built. The blown small block, Push button trans and Vette rear should be unique enough if anyone knew it. Color is the same (hasn't been repainted) but wheels are definitely different. Interior was Black and it also had a black tall top.
More 1970 R&C "Readers Rides" and neat stuff: The family that plays with early Ford tin stays together: Anyone notice all the five-spokes on cars in 1970? Can't get enough! Nice California '34 stocker: I just want that Deuce phaeton, you guys can have the rest of that stuff! Early Times weekend hang-out: Jim Jacobs assists a nice (leggy) lady with her '56 4-door hardtop.
Ahhh, the good old days, when everything looked "right". I remember seeing that stuff on the streets on a daily basis. Even then, when it was everywhere, I got excited and stared every time. One of the few things I didn't take for granted
My Favorite era of Hot Rodding. There was a certain 57 Chevy in my town that was the one that did it for me. Chrome straight axle and rear, chrome ladder bars, big n little Cragars, Candy apple red, ect ect. It was daily driven by a guy that worked at Safeway. A rich asshole bought it in the 80s and put a Camaro clip in it, lowered it, Centerlines, and painted it yellow. Pissed me off.
The 32 Rockne is now owned by the builders son and still in Ohio. The builders name was Buz and he passed away sadly a few years ago.His son is working on getting the car together and i believe it might be almost finished. I was told it was at the first Street Rod Nationals.Always loved that car.
Just to show I was around here is a photo with me, my Dad's now my 36 and his buddies 32. The 32 was painted blue with spray cans, then got a candy red and flame job. Wonder if it is still around. We were on our way to a big rod show in rochester. I'm the one with the bucket hat.
Gasser-inspired bad-ass wooden Model A: Moving away from gasser-look stuff toward rods, here's more "Readers Rides": Looks like 1960 but it was in fact '70:
