I'm experiencing some shifting problems with my 3 speed in my 51 Fleetline. The best I can describe it is that its hard to shift out of second and its worse with higher rpm. If I wait to long to shift into 3rd then it wont come out of second at all and I have to wait until the revs drop until I can shift. once its out of 2nd then there is no problem shifting to 3rd. Im pretty sure it's an internal problem, I've adjusted the linkage as per the service manual and Have new rubber grommets. It also shifts fine into all gears, just coming out of second gear at higher RPMS, it comes out of 2nd fine if I shift early into 3rd. Im kinda transmission dumb, should I just be looking for a good second hand ******?
Could be : Worn shifter fork not uncommon; syncro getting worn and wanting to **** ; general wear in everything. The syncro design in that trans ****s,big heavy thing. And the 1st rev slider lives on the od of it,that could be worn and causing a hang up,that fork might be the prob also. If you go for another trans get a 53-4 as they are a bit better.
i had this same problem on my 53...i attributed it to me driving a 50+ year old car like it was a race car..(this was when i was in high school) my solution.. i bought a 54 and stole the trans out of it and now i have a nice driving original 53, and a 54 that i can throw a v8 into and chop the **** out of it. but that was just my solution.
