Slightly off-topic question for the masses. This Studebaker Lark Daytona near my work (see my thread on the Daytona) now has a bright green sticker on the front window courtesy of the Saratoga, CA police Dept. saying that it's been parked there for too long. I'm figuring if the owner is really as lazy or missing as he seems, the Stude'll be towed before long. Am I right in guessing that it'll wind up in police auction before long? Are there any tips or tricks on tracking the car between towage and auction? -Taylor
my not go to auction. here me keep then 30 days then there all ours to do as we want.. get a chain and go.dont let it get away
Well, I figures that, if nothing else, I could get the info off the sticker and then call and see if they can give me an idea (if it gets towed) whether or not it'll go to auction and so forth. Just get all the data and try to track it. -Taylor
Get the info off of the sticker and follow up now, don't wait. If the auctions there are anything like here you'll be bidding against a bunch of yahoos that will pay way more than it is worth. If you know who owns it, go offer them $100 right now. If it gets towed it'll probably get damaged or out of your reach....
well here if it gets towed the towing people keep it untill you pay them the towing charge and the city fines...If you dont pay they can sell the car for whatever they want....
I've put notes on cars that have towaway citations on them saying I want to buy the car. Sometimes the owner calls, but be ready to move, because chances are, he'll call you as the tow truck is sitting there. It doesnt hurt to ask around in the neighborhood who owns it. The owner may not even know its been tagged. Alot of wrecking yards and dealers have an "in" with the tow yards. You may never see the car in an auction.
find out who the city's 'offical' towing service is. call them and find out what thier policy is. in our city, the tow yard can do different things depending on the nature of the tow/impound. some vehicles hafta go to auction, some the tow yard can do with what they want. sell them off the lot, junk 'em, auction, what ever. just dont tell them what vehicle youre inquiring about. just make a general inquiry. it keeps the potential sale price low. but first, make every effort to contact the owner first.
the owner is likely to face towing charges and storage fees if they tow it. get the plate number or VIN if it does'nt have one. track the owner down anyway you can (you can get that info on the net, might cost a few bucks but could be worth it). get ahold of the owner, tell them you see it is about to be towed and offer them a few bucks for it. get a title and or bill of sale and haul that sucka out of there... years ago my mom found a car on the side of the road that was the same as one of her old cars that needed some parts, she found the owner through the plate number, called, and it was ours for $75. better move NOW!!! if you befriend a cop they can get you the info you need...

[/ QUOTE ] That's what happens around here. They go to auction and some moron who only knows that "old cars are worth a lot of money" will way overbid and shut you out. Hey man, from all the cars I see out of Cali with no title (damn near all, you guys must steal each others cars all the time LOL) you may as well just lift it. LOL Seriously though, Zman is right, get all the info you can. Hell even pay to get the DMV info from the license plate and contact the owner. They're probably some crackhead who would take a couple of hundred. Good luck man. I know you're like me and short on cash so you need to get a good deal where you can.
Well, I already left one note on the windscreen that wound up disappearing...whether it was the owner or otherwise, I dunno. But I am going to put another one on there tomorrow and see what happens. I have the plate # and I will also get the other info tomorrow. Thanks for the help, folks! -Taylor
Actually pulled up to work yesterday and the car was gone! By the time I left work at 4pm, the car was back, but parked on the owner's property and the sticker from the PD had been thoroughly scraped off. Something tells me this guy cares at least a little for it. -Taylor
Yeah, it sounds like he might. But he might also be wondering what to do with it now that his 'storage' is gone and he has to keep in on his own property. He probably has a wife like some of you guys who looks at him and wonders what the hell he's gonna do with that POS. The notes are good but it wouldn't hurt to pound on his door and see what's up. All he can do is put a gun in your ribs and tell you to haul ass.
Speaking of abandoned cars, there's an abandoned Buick Riviera in Seattle, in the Wallingford dist. It's parked at an abandoned bank type of place. I think it's a 65. Never really looked at it, I have seen it there for two years near my sister's apartment. Mebbe a homeless guy is camping inside. Who knows? Just hope someone can rescue it. If anyone is interested, I can get the street names from my sister. Rescue it, please! -Crew
If I bought a car at a police auction, it had better have cop tires, cop suspension, and cop shocks. It should have a 440 plant and be made before cataltic converters so that it runs good on regular gas.

Really? I guess it's abandoned. Do you know if it is or not? It seems to be in fair shape, It's in a sort of carport, so maybe the weather hasn't taken it's toll. -Crew
I see the Saratoga cops are still a bunch of dicks with nothing better to do than hassle people for minor bullshit... Some things never change.
