Just a little rant here. I've been trying to find stock upper and lower water pump pulleys for a small block. I've looked on E-Bay and tried Owens salvage. NO LUCK. I can get the gay chrome ones or billet but I just want some old plain painted ones. Does anyone have any ideas?? The junk yards around here ****!!! Todd
Yea, they only have the chrome or billet ones. I did find a place that has repop powder coated ones for $80 a piece. I din't think they would be this hard to find
i know at the shop i hang out at , all of the 283's are pulley less..... i started buying old nasty chrome units and hitting them with the can... brandon
muscle factory in placentia has them 714-223-0745, or opg has them 714-230-6000 both in so cal, will ship
Had similar issues too in the past.. After i exhausted my search i picked up the phone and called Summit..around 20 bux ( or a touch more) each for sbc short pump pulleys....blasted and painted them. Just bought another pair for my truck from them. Didn't even bother to start the search again.
Chevy? up to 72 on pickups & suburbans. Some think that trucks went long when cars did, but up to 72 will have them if the motor was not swapped.
That would have been my next suggestion, Summit, PAW, Jegs, etc. or even Kanter. Or, for that matter, LMC truck.
Muscle car restoration companies are a great place to find OE parts like pulleys and brackets. They aren't cheap, but there is a certain satisfaction of being able to order them and be done with it. Time IS money. -Brad
Tony, I may end up going that route. I do have a dumb question. Will blasting take enough of the chrome of to paint ove them? Todd
You can powder right on top of tight chrome. still, the right answer is a swap meet or junk yard. After weeks of searching for originals I got some off craigslist 2 blocks from work for next to nothing. I was at Bloomington Gold picking up my Cokers and there were huge stockpiles of them, but unfortunately I didn't have the measurements I needed with me to get the right ones. Apparently vette guys hate black.
You blast the surface to give the primer something to bite into, your not removing the plating. Use a good epoxy primer and whatever your paint will be and you should be good. On the 283 for my dad's 29 we're using a set of "gay" chrome ones and keeping them shiny. They're older and seem to be decent quality. They'll go fine with the old, heavy gauge but equally gay, chrome oil pan I have for it as well. -Bigchief.
I had the same issue and problem trying to find short pulleys. I wound up finding what I wanted at a swap meet here halfway local. I gave $1 for the dual groove crank pulley and $10 for a blasted/primered dual groove water pump pulley.
270259002048 search pulley and pully ... people can't spell 280247171375 anything you want will eventually show up on ebay... you need to search every couple of days.
I recently bought a set from the Chevrolet dealer ... #3850838 for the lower pulley #3995642 for the water pump pulley NEW ... but take notice ... these are double row ( two belt ) pulleys. My dealer had them in stock ... but he is a large, well established dealer in business since 1961.
I have 2-3 small upper pulleys 1 groove & 2 groove. they came off of old SBC projects. there sitting on the shelf in my garage. if you want I can measure them and take a pic for you tonight? Paul
Try searching for pulleys from a vehicle that had a short wp. Like a 1955 chevy. I just typed "1955 chevy pulley" into ebay and got like 6 of 'em. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1955...014QQitemZ330254831360QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW
do they run true? I bought a set of those chrome ones too..there hanging on the wall POS had so much run out on them that i thought it would end up throwing a belt. Sorry you cant have mine but than again they might not work anyways i have a stock set that came off a 68 327 and im keeping them around. I see them at swapmeets every now and than. the billet ones can be painted..yes i did just say that out loud
Hard to believe that they are so hard to find. All 50's and 60's SBC's had these needed pulleys. I looked and looked all over when I needed one for the '50 Chevy pu project, ... had to spacer out a Ford pulley. Now I have 3 of them hoarded!
Todd, just as Big Chief said. I didn't remove the plating, just gave it a textured surface for the paint to adhere to. I've never had a problem with it flaking off on any i've done.. On some old one's i did most of the chrome did flake off though..Once you break through it's a ***** because whatever plating is left will more than likely be bonded pretty good..And if you don't get it all off you may run into a pealing problem at some point.
