My girlfriend and I are here in Anchorage. She's here for work and I came along for the ride. I'm looking for something to do during the day while she's on the job site....any suggestions?
How long are you there? I used to salmon fish years ago with family in Prince William Sound. This time of year is all about salmon fishing. Hop on a train into Whittier and then charter a boat, a good captain will know where the fish are running. If you go for salmon stay away from the one's that are near their spawning grounds. They fight less and are horrible to eat. Kings fight the most but Sockeye are the tastiest. Or go down to Homer and charter a Halibut boat. Hope you hook into a 300 pounder. I forget the name of the ski slope near by but the lifts are open and if you're a hiker. Eat lots of seafood, never better. The Avenue Bar I believe it's called, lots of "character." Charter a bush plane for a couple of hours. My brother is in PWS right now in the Eshamy Bay cabin. Man now I wish I was there. Have a blast.
fishing in homer rocks.check out the "salty dog saloon" there. stop by "coal point trading" the hilstrands from "the deadliest catch" own it. go north to denali park.
Thanks for the info but I'm not much about fishing. (Yea, I know, this is like a fishing Meca). Didn't know if there was a cruise night or a custom/hot rod shop or anything like that.
Donzie, Give Brian a call # (907) 495-5551 hes about 100 miles north of Anchorage. He says he'll have a few brews with ya, fill ya in on some cool car stuff. Hes also originally from Michigan too! I sent him a PM on another board and filled him in on your trip. -Shiny
Definantly go to Denali and charter a small plane. That's what I did the last time I was there. Simply breathtaking and one of the highlights of the trip.
In Anchorage, you can usually listen to the radio and they'll tell of the fundraiser carwash that the girls from the "Great Alaska Bush Company" do every once in awhile. Never was expensive, and I'd get every one of my cars washed that day! Or you can go to Chilcoot Charlie's (Coots to the locals) and watch some of the local "wildlife". Definitely an interesting place. Kind of a cool drive, but you can go up towards Portage and see the glacier and all. There's a cool little shop along the way that sells seal oil candles. The candles burn away completely without any residue. Check out Denali Steakhouse over in Palmer or Wasilla (can't remember which) Good food and if memory serves me right, all you can each king crab legs when in season.
Sounds like two great sports that would be great together...! <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Rsac-FU8ox8&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Rsac-FU8ox8&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/1BBzpLEjAr8&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/1BBzpLEjAr8&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
I grew up in AK and still have freinds in Wasilla..... How long are you going to be there? You could head out towards Palmer to the dragstrip for Fri-Sat drags.....it was called Polar Raceway, but the track was all redone years ago and may have been renamed....probably the most down to earth dragstrip you will EVER go to....
I'm down here in Kodiak, but that is bit too far of a haul. You could rent a bike and cruise the Seward highway. As long as you avoid the motorhomes it will be a sweet ride. -Mark
