Stock engine in '31 Chevy? 216?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by shifty50, Jul 27, 2008.

  1. What is the stock engine in a '31 Chevy. All that's in mine is a short block, it sort of looks like the 216 out of my '50 but I'm not sure. I'm going to try and just get my '31 mobile right now so I'm either going to try and find a head for the stock engine or some other full running engine. Do non babbit inline 6cyls have the same bellhousing/motor mount? Thanks.

It is not a 216 if it is the stock one. 216 engines started in 1937. See if you can find a casting number on the side of the block and go the inliners web site. They have extensive lists of casting numbers and engine sizes. Most 235 engines have insert bearings. You can use stock parts to match them to almost any transmission. The torque tube I'm not sure about. If the '31 torque tube end is the same as 37 & up, everything fits except the mounts. Hope that's a start.

    it would be a 194...

  4. The casting # is 836409. www.inliners.org only has casting #s as early as '42. Here's a pic:

Click at the top of the Inliners page where it says "lots of Inline casting numbers" and scroll down a bit, you will find 836409 all for 1931.

From the Inliner site click on Larrow & Sons truck parts. They are into Inline stuff. They have some good info on Chevy 6 engine swapping. How to make later engines fit early cars.

Apparently something has changed with the Larrow outfit. I don't see them listed now on Inliners.

The tech tips section on Inliners has some good stuff. Larrow used to have info on the mounts for getting a later engine into the earlier cars.

  8. 194, Thanks guys. Is it worth finding a head for and trying to free up/rebuild the bottom end?

Also I apparantly have been looking at a different site for info, could you send me the link OldBuzzard to the site you're talking about? Thanks

If you are trying to keep it original, and don't plan on driving it alot, then rebuild it. Otherwise, upgrade to something newer...
