My '49 coupe is running rough and it's never run rough before. We've checked all the vac*** lines, filters, etc. and suspect its bad gas because the car has barely been driven since the winter. Q: Is there an off-t******lf product that removes water from gasoline? Thanks.
dump a bottle of isopropyl alcohol in your tank. This'll help clear the water out. HEET is a brand name of a product that also works
a can of Heet will absorb a few onces of water . if you have lot\'s of water you may be better off draining the fuel tank and blow out the fuel lines
Ya got E-85 there? Gas mixes with alcohol. Water mixes with alcohol. Just depends on how much water you're dealing with. Too much Alcohol in a carb not jetted for it will run bad too, and it attacks some metals and older types of rubber hoses, etc.
You can use isopropyl alcohol from the pharmacy in huge ratiios. I had a truck with a bad gasket on the top of the tank and went through a low water crossing. (funny, the water was actually very high) It picked up enough water that it delivered no fuel at all to the carb. With a half full tank, I added about a gallon of alcohol and agitated it a bit. I was able to restart it and drive it to fresh fuel, top it off and burn it all out. I added another quart on the next tank and it was done. I changed the gasket by lifting the bed and never did drop the tank.
hook up an eletric fuel pump if you dont have one and Pump out the tank as much as you can , hook it up to your gas line if you have to or put a line down into the tank leave the cap off over night . Put in some fresh gas in the morning . Alsow if you can drain the bowl on the carb and pump out the line . This is what ive done in the past
If you didn't buy the petrol (gas) with water in it and have a steel fuel tank, then condensation (especially over winter) is probably to blame. A quick and cheap way to "disolve" the water into your fuel is to add metho (methylated spirits). This will allow it to burn harmlessly in the cylinders with the fuel. Beware of possible corrosion in unlined steel fuel lines and the tank, due to the water, that may cause problems later.
Your 49 should have a drain plug on the tank. Why not drain it and flush it out with something like gas or the alchohol and then run the fuel out of the lines and refill and see what ya got?
Easy test drain some water out of your tank into a "GL***" bottle and let it sit for a while. Water being the heaviest liquid there is will always settle to the bottom. If your sample bottle shows an appreciable amount of water drain the entire tank, blow out the fuel lines, change the fuel filter and get some PB Blaster small engine treatment for the carb. I don't know what the hell they put in that stuff but it works. Around here they sell it in Lowes. I tried in on a tractor that someone had left the air cleaner off of and rain got into the carb. Needless to say it wouldn't start. I drained the fuel bowl and followed the directions on the can and the thing lit right off, that sold me.
Thanks for the comments. I'm going to throw in a bottle of the premium HEET and see what happens. If it still runs like ****, I'll drain the tank and see what I have. Thanks.
