When a Pertronix goes bad what does the motor do?

Point well taken. And I'm glad to hear that some of you have had excellent luck with the Pertonix. I may eventually try the Pertronix system again in the Olds, maybe after the rebuild. But right now the points are working great. When I installed the Ignitor and the Flamethrower coil many years back, I also followed the recommended Pertronix recurve for the distributor (no idea what that was now), changed to new plugs and resistor wires. Initially, for about 3 weeks it ran flawless, and then it just wouldn't stay in tune and tons of detonation.

Anyway, I'm probably not gonna score another set of NOS GM points after this last one is used up, so maybe it's worth another shot sometime down the road. I hated pulling all the Pertronix stuff way back when, but the Olds has been running flawless with good old points and dist. curved back to stock. No need to change now.

I've installed 5 sets of Pertronix in some of my customers cars and even in a couple of boats. My customers love it when it there engine fires the first time and performs better than with the old point ignition. I also run a Pertonix ignition with Mallory coil in my 52 Ford F-1 that has a warmed over 51 Merc flathead in it. During the winter months the truck is stored in a garage and when I go to pick it up in the spring I'm surprised at how quick it fires up and it's still a 6 volt positive ground system. My problem with points is that today you just can't get a decent set, there all cheap *** made in Chinka ****. Most of the points sets I've seen recently the damned contacts don't line up for **** and the damn rubbing blocks are made of plastic! What the hell ever happened to decent parts. So the bottom line is I've had great success with Pertronix and swear by them. I just got another set to install in my wife's 67 Mustang!
