If some one had a really cheap truck that had all the right stuff I might be interested in buying it. If it was a 36 or something close

Do a search of the forum using terms like California DMV. You're bound to get some info.

As with any vehicle without a ***le, you will need a bill of sale. Since the truck has no VIN, you'll need to get a new VIN ***igned.

    Search the forum.

As far as I know I need to do the vin verification at the chp office first. then a weight slip then a brake and light, then to dmv for some registration.

Do you have a "bill of sale"? You can't do a VIN verification without a VIN though.

If you go to the bigger swap meets, there are people who sell ***les. Find a ***le for the years your cab was used, and then stamp the ***le number on the frame.

The thing is it's a 36 with no numbers and a hand made frame...... I have another 38 or 39 cab with a tag on the side that has a vin number on it. Should I use that tag and just try to get it registered as a 38 or 39. I don't really care just as long as I get some tags and plates

I really don't have much money and I really don't want any problems. Speacial construction sounds expensive.

Or do you think I should tell them that I found that vin tag under the gas tank that was under the seat and was probably removed when they channeled it in the fifties, sounds like a good story to me. If they ask why I took the tank out I'll tell them I was moving it to the bed. If they are smart enough to know that its a 36 and the tag is for a 38 I'll just say I don't know how it got there. It's been there quite awhile. Or should I just roll into the chp with no numbers or papers

in cali you go to the dmv first and get the paperwork started, bring any recipts with you,and your bill or sale,(hand written ok)they will have you take the truck to chp and they will check the engine # and look for any other #'s,if they dont find any they will put a blue tag on it with a new #,then you go back to the dmv and get a ***le.the year of the engine will mean smog or no smog inspection so its best to use a older engine ,pre 1965,at least thats what i have been told ,you could buy another truck with a ***le but its not legal to switch #'s

Hemmings Motor News, I'll hit up barns and nobles tonight and grab one. But when you buy one of those what do you get. I tried to register a 57chev pu and had a ***le and plates, I bought it in 91 and never had it changed into my name, They told me I had to do all the stuuf on it to. vin varify, weight slip and brake and light. So if all I'm getting is a pink, I don't think thats worth much. They pretty much told me my 57 pink was kinda like toilet paper

Basically you need to get a VIN somehow.

I had the same situation with my 31 Tudor...original body, home-bilt frame, no vin. The vins for early ford came from the engine which was stamped on the frame and that was covered by the body.

I found a ford engine block circa 1931 and "put it in the car". Next the number needs to be stamped on the frame where it would have been put at the factory. (Note: this action pisses off the smog nazzis in california and is not quite legal even though the engine and body are legit).

You have to check the vin before doing any of this...you can do it at any DMV office. They might charge you $5 to print a report, but I lucked out and the lady just told me "the vin is clear" and I had no charge.

Do some research on cars made in 36 and try to find out how the VIN #s if any were put on the cars? There's lots of info online...so keep at it. Just cover your hind end.

Also, if you have a "friend" who is a peace officer, chp, car dealer...have them do the vin verificaion if they are so authorized. Most traffic officers in local police/sherrif departments can do this and most times they're just interested in verifying that no parts are stolen.

    hope this helps good luck

  25. First off, do a search. We have been through this subject over and over.

Second, stop drinking coffee, or whatever is making you unable to ***emble all your thoughts and questions in one post.

It can be done, and will make it less annoying to read.

Third, we will not encourage you to do anything illegal. It sounds like you know what to do already, just do it, and it will be handled.

You're asking about a legal instrument (***le) and it's best not to perjure yourself into a prison.

This is a computer forum, you have to know how to use a computer to get any value here.

I apologize if anything I stated suggested anything illegal. Many rodders have gone crazy over this stuff. Do your homework, take your time and have fun. Just get your info right and cover yourself.

I guess I need to do a little more reading and make some decisions. Thanks for the input. I'll keep you posted.

  29. Quite ***le is around $1800.00 You retain an attorney, request quite ***le & provide all bills of sale & receipts for everything. Judge approves & the State issues you a VIN number. It will be a 2008 build. Not a 19??.

Best to keep it simple & get this done with as little of the car put together as possible.

The more stuff bolted to it, the more receipts needed to be provided.

I recommend: body & tube frame.....show bill of sale on body & show material receipt on a stick of 20' rectangle tubing. If you put a motor in it, then have the ***le to the car that that engine came out of.
