Got a 59 Dual Hydromatic that i'm trying to understand, in the middle of the shifter lever shaft there is another shaft which controls what i can only describe as the kickdown mechanism, Any body know any thing about this ???
The lever does allow for kickdown but also controls the throttle valve in the transmission valve body. The TV (throttle valve) is used in conjunction with the internal governor to control the timing of the shift points too. So this adjustment is critical to proper operation. Adjustment wise, normally you adjust positioning of the TV rod by loosening the rod clevis and turning it till the TV rod length is set to carb wide open/ transmission lever all the way forward (TOWARD ENGINE).
Thanks for the reply, This install is a fresh one as i'm making a linkage to operate 6 x 94's. I will be using a cable to operate it, The shaft coming from the box has no arm on it as it is missing, I can make up something no problem but could do with some original dimensions if you have them.
not to **** in, but i too have a hydro trans. (pontiac) am i understanding this adjustment correctly ? with the throttle wide open, the t.v. arm should be at it's highest possible point ? (all the up, toward the engine). my trans shifts fine, but seems to upshift a little too soon, and it seems to take alot of throttle pedal to make it downshift. usually when climbing big hills, my trans will not downshift until i have the throttle almost mashed to the floor. i'm not sure how mine is set right this minute, but i will check when i get home from work. thanks for this info...
the TV lever on the side of the trans needs to be all the way back at idle (this keeps the car from "creeping" when you stop in gear) and all the way forward (maximum oil pressure to eliminate slippage) with the throttle wide open.
Those hydramatics both single coupling and (what Langy has) dual coupling have a kickdown operation where you really have to punch it hard and fast to kickdown to a lower gear. As far as shifting early, you can adjust the TV rod a little bit tighter, (toward engine) and try it but not too much, otherwise the transmission will "hunt" for the shifts. It usually needs to be as Yorgatron says, idle speed = all the way back, full throttle= all the way forward. If the trans still shifts early, you may need to get someone to look at the governor or take some pressure readings. TV pressure = Governor pressure = upshift
Also keep in mind that the TV rod adjustment needs to take into account the weight of the vehicle and intake system. A light car with multiple carbs will require a different settiing than a heavy vehicle with a single carb in order to obtain decent shift points.
On a single coupling 1950 hydramatic the center to center dimension of the stock arm is 4-7/8". Dual could be different.
