i have a 276 desoto hemi, it came with an auto trans, now i want to install my standard flywheel but there no threaded holes to bolt it on?, how were they atached from the factory, i have searched on here for hours and theres tons of good info but no one really explains how they were from new, thanks
I I just took my 276 transmission that was a semi auto, converter and clutch off. The torque converter had studs that slipped through the crank and then nuts went onto the studs between the crank and engine block. I bought an adaptor from Hothemiheads and it came with flywheel and adaptor plate. I needed to drill the adaptor and the kit came with nuts and bolts to fasten the flywheel. I'd think it would be the same set up with the bolts facing the engine block and the nuts going on between the crank and block.
Run a 1/2-20 tap in the holes, then use the usual flex plate bolts. QEC (73RR here) makes a good adaptor kit, but i had to get (at least a few)longer bolts for the collar.
Like George says, the holes can be tapped to 1/2-20. Normally, the flywheel or converter had studs on it with nuts on the crank side. A SERIOUS PITA, especially when you're trying to pull a locked up motor out of a car with one of those stupid factory bellhousings that don't allow you to simply pull the trans off the back(Go ahead, ask me how I know... )
Tom Waters makes a great stick or auto adapter for the early Hemi... none better IMHO. http://home.together.net/~****ers/
heres the info i was looking for, the bolts have the heads ground off or clipped as they say, thanks for everyones info.
