A Hooper, Utah farmer has erected a fence in his backyard made of three old cars sticking up in the air to send a message to new neighbors that he can do whatever he wants on his farm. "This is just a fun way for me to say, 'Hey boys, I'm still here,'" said Rhett Davis. "This is my redneck Stonehenge."

Davis came up with the idea after neighbors who recently moved into homes next to his hayfield complained about his farm.

"The people who bought the homes say, 'Well, we love looking into your yard and seeing the horses and the cattle, but we don't like the flies, and we don't like the mosquitoes,' and when I cut my field to bale it, they say, 'We don't like the dust in the air,' " Davis said.

Davis said he offered to pay half the cost of a fence between his property and the others and to build it. He said his neighbors declined the offer, saying it would block their view.

Neighbors declined to comment to the Standard-Examiner of Ogden.

Davis said after the neighbors declined his offer, he used a backhoe to dig three large holes on the edge of his property, then took three cars that had competed in demolition derbies and planted them nose-first into the ground.

He said the cars were planted out of humor rather than spite. He said it's important that new residents moving into the area realize that Hooper remains a farming community.

The area has grown recently with new residents who desire a country atmosphere but don't want the smells and noises of farm life, Davis said.

"I respect that they're here and spent a lot on their homes, but on the other hand, give me a little bit, too. I've been here since I was 7 years old," he said.

Davis said he doesn't intend to keep the cars up permanently.

"I've talked to my neighbors and worked things out. I really just thought this would be a funny thing to do," he said. "These can come out just as easy as they went in."

That's the problem with neighboors, they tend to suck. I had some new neighboors want me to pay for 1/2 of a fence because they did not want to look at my junk. My relpy: Well, don't look at it if you don't like it! Please.

I get the same thing...my property (6 acres) butts up to a subdivision, if I mow my pasture, clean the corrals/stalls, etc during the day, I get complaints from the stay at home moms who can't enjoy thier pools and yardwork...if I do the work in the evening, I get complaints from everyone else that I'm interfering with family time.

What really gets me is I've let 4 of the complainers have access to my pasture to get to thier backyards to dig swimming pools...takes me a good month of tending to get the pasture back from the trucks going in and out...funny they didn't complain about that noise.

My only solace is when I irrigate at 1 or 2 am...and all their dogs are barking at me:)

As a farm boy (20+ years removed) I say more power to him! Just 3 cars?? I'd vote for as much farm junk as can be found. I'm sorry to see it's not going to stay. Just to show how far we've come (or how far gone we've gone) It wasn't too many years ago that here (Virginia) was a "fence out" state. If you wanted to keep my livestock off your property you HAD to share the expense of a fence. :p Ah well! The junkyard in my back yard dream may not happen.
Also they look very good for demolition derby rejects!!

These "stay at home" moms nowadays don't actually have anything to do except look out the window and think about how to make everyone elses life as shitty as hers. I know the type all to well.

There's one junkyard (excuse me, "auto recycler") in town, used to be out in the middle of nowhere, now there's a subdivision next to it. Neighbors bitched about it, so the owner made a "wall" around the yard out of cars stacked 3 high.

idiots. And I don't mean the junkyard guys.

I like this guy!!!! Got the same thing where I live except now with high gas prices they're starting to move back into the city so it makes paying a more at the pump a tad less painful.

When we moved to Los Banos in '99(have since moved back!), there was a farmer that put up a big sign informing the "new arrivals" that they are moving to a farming community and to expect smells, dust and farm equipment on the roads.
I personally don't get the "Nimby" mentality that some people have in regard to farming.
As if meat and produce "magically appear" in the grocery stores!

  21. Ever since the gov. decieded to build those stupid fuckin walls around the freeways, they have opened the box for assholes to move in somewhere and decied they dont like their neighbor, whether it be a freeway, drag strip, farm, junk yard, shopping .........dont get me started....If you dont like noise etc, dont buy the house next door! Good for the farmer. An now I can only vent on stupid drivers since I cant look for cars in peoples back yards on the freeways anymore.

Same thing is happening here in my part of Ohio. All the farms are being bought out to build houses and mini malls, it's a shame. Then all the people want to complain about the smells and dust produced by the few farms that are left. More power to him! I think he should plant a whole crop of cars in the field and see what it produces.:D

If you put up a fence to block the view of your old cars these type of people would complain about the fence. What's so important about their view anyway. These type of people want to view a prairie meadow from their air conditioned sun room drinking their crappacino whilst conversing about what is occurring at the Tennis Club (gossip). I'm so sick of people complaining about what their country neighbors are doing and placing on their property. If these people actually worked on a farm; hauled hay, row cropped, worked cattle, anything, maybe they would see things differently, but i doubt it. I grew up on a farm with old machinery and trucks in the fence rows. Leave us alone, we are not living in a neighborhood with covenants. Amen to the Utah farmer. I want to donate him some cars to build a bigger fence.
    Thanks for letting me rant.

Right On Brother! I'm glad he did it! We have hunting property up north from where I live.....200 acres....surrounded by tens of thousands of acres of farm land. My dad and his friends bought it 25 years ago. When we go hunting.....for 3 weeks out of the whole year, we bring up campers...its always been that way. This asshole decides to buy a parcel of land across the street....build a 3 HOLE GOLF COURSE next to his gigantic house...and then complains about having to look at the campers for the 3 weeks they're up there.

I just don't get that yuppie mentality. Same problem as the racetrack but here its a concert venue. Its been there since I was born and I'm 32. People move directly next to it, then complain about the noise. People that live on Woodward do the same thing. Move directly next to a main road, then complain about hot rods and motorcycles. Dumb....that's the only thing I can describe these people with.

I'd like to see that farmer put HUNDREDS of cars up!

God bless the man that farms and has a sense of humor!
Those "neighbors" of his should count their blessings that they have someone that cool next door.
    Never met a farmer I didn't like!
    Hope things go his way.

I always get a kick out of "cityfolk" who move out to the country and then complain about things that were there long before them. Working for the sheriff's office I am usually the point of contact for complaints when people call it and I've heard my share. As the city expanded out towards a farm where the guy has cows and has been there about 50 years, one night I got a call from someone because the cows were "moo-ing" and keeping them awake and the guy asked if I could send someone to tell the farmer to quiet his cows down. I told them the cows were there first. I've heard complaints about "smells" and "junk" cars and farm equipment all the time, and my respose is always the same...it was there before you chose to build your house there.

thats pretty damn cool. ill never understand why people move in to somewhere that they know is loud, or dirty or smelly and then complain about it. maybe 10 years ago they built all these houses near my favorite shooting range up in duarte (fish canyon for you local guys). it had been operating there since the the 1930s. then the new neighbors started complaining about all the gunfire. the same gunfire they heard when they looked at the houses. within a few years they got the gun club shut down. 70 years it was there and in less than ten a bunch of whiney spoiled hippies got it shut down. no more trap, no more skeet, no more 1100 yard rifle range. now i have to drive way up into the hills and go to burro canyon to shoot my black powder guns cause they wont let me shoot em at the indoor ranges. sorry bout the off-topic rant. new complainy neighbor stories always remind me of the demise of fish cayon.

That is awsome, i live in a small community and have been in the same spot since 1979 and we get the same crap from new neighbors that we need to clean it up and that they don't like to look at all the old cars in are back yard. Well we are grandfathered in and we aren't changing a thing, there have been 6-8 familes that moved in and have moved out in the last 10 years that didn't like are stuff, we aren't leaving.

A sheriff's deputy showed up at my house in the country once and said someone had complained about one of my roosters crowing. He said he was just stopping by because he had to and my rooster could keep right on crowing whenever he felt like it. I said you are damn right!
