I was waiting on this to see if the thread/interest would carry on while I was occupied with my road trip. Glad to see it still has life. I am going to pick thru the thread and come up with a 2-week, 30-day etc. plan that is doable within the group and everyone's interest. I am also going to draft a letter to existing ***ociations to see it they will lend support...than go from there whether a separate ***ociation/group needs to emerge.

I found a 42 chevy 4 door In a local bone yard here in michigan..a bit rotted, and no hood. Engine block still in it, missing the head. it was a roller.
asked the owner how much for the entire thing..he said he wouldnt sell it complete, just parts..so i asked about the ch***is, how much (for a fellow hamber) he said 350..rediculous..im sure its gone by now, what a waste.
and it isnt something you see much of up here in the North.

  7. Awsome idea. But would it work? I think that a majority of the people that have this stuff know its worth something. I dont know how it is where you guys are but around here the only junkyards that have stuff are ones that few know about. They ARE here though. I personally pulled a 34 ford pu cab out of a junkyard here with doors for 150. and its a well known cl***ic yard. But i think the problem is you when you get out in the boondocks where these things still are. people want fast cash....and sadly s****ping them is the quickest method. Theres a guy 20 miles from me selling truck cabs for 100 a piece because he claims he get about that in s****. 53 chevy 5 window cab over...40 ford and more. Hes crushing a bunch of diamond ts and reos as well. Dont worry...i got all the headlights. 10 bucks a piece. But if we could get the word out to all those unknown places, we could maybe mark them on a map so people actually know they are there? I really like the idea though

  8. I saved a 53 buick last sunday . It was already on a rollback to be hauled to the car masher first thing monday:(. Only thing do you know what that beast weighs i had to give 20% more than crusher price to buy it. I consider it a investment in my retirement. We plan to have a widely advtertsied auction in three or four years when all of the others are long gone and crusher. We need to be realistic most of us can afford to save only a few when we have to outbid the s**** man:mad:. We need to do what we can with what we have to work with. OldWolf

I think the first tool we can use to start marketing this idea is Craigslist.
    • If we can get a volunteer from each major city listed on Craigslist to post an ad for the concept; rotating the ad between the auto section and the general community section.
    • Invite people who are interested in helping to contact you (or me)
    • and invite people with pre-65 cars in question to give you a call or /email
    • We also need to target non virtual individuals. Perhaps by posting flyer's at community centers, libraries etc.
    • We need some help designing flyer's that can be downloaded and printed
    • I think that everyone should get to know your local pick and pull places to have them contact you if anything pre-65 comes in. That we will help them get it in to the right hands or will rescue it if its headed to the crusher...which may require $$ something else that needs to be considered.
I am not sure how to utilize HAMB with out ticking people off. its hard to work with only one thread to keep track of things. Suggestions? should I start a Google group or keep this going on HAMB?

  10. If you want to keep them from getting crushed you have to pay more than they do. Simple economics. To buy one FROM the s**** dealer I had to pay what he'd get for it processed (crushed) - a 1600-lb piece of **** cost me $300.

A '53 Chevy COE should bring $1500 no problem if it has any floors left to it, and most guys just want the cab and nose. $100 is nothing to pick that up. It's not 1968 or even 1982 anymore, when you could buy whole cars for $5 and $10.

I tried to start a thread on this for my area a couple weeks ago and no one gave a ****, I don't think anyone else even posted to it.

The pick and pull is going to be the hardest nut because YES, of course they want money...but as you can see from an earlier reply some people are willing to put the money out to save a piece a history.

Also, pick and pulls aren't really into marketing themselves/or what they got...have you ever talked to these guys over the phone...they ain't always the most forthcoming about what they got and not really on the web. They are a lot different than 'bone yards'. SO a way to present it is; tell them via our network we can get them top dollar for pre-65 American cars if they let us know what comes in.

Ultimately, we need to get the cars before they get to the pick and pull which requires community awareness which can be started on-line but even more importantly off-line to elders who don't frequent the net or non-car people who may have gotten stuck with a car they don't know the value of or have the time to deal with. Usually which results them going to the phone book and calling a junker.

So with the new roll-out of new features on HAMB; there is 'social groups'.

I have started a new group dedicated to the concept of the 'Call Before You Crush' Network. If you are interested in keeping up this conversation please join the group:

Sell it as a "Green" idea, seems you can't go wrong with that these days.
