Can anybody tell me what is the proper procedure for separating the hub from the drum on an original 40 Ford setup? We got the drum/hub ***embly removed from the axles using the proper removal tool. But now we can't get the hub separated from the drum to have the drums turned or replaced? Thanks in advance Angie
Drums can be turned on the hubs. At one time every mechanical garage had the arbor to do this. Today you will be lucky to find someone local who can do the job. Old Ford drums are "swedged". to the hubs. The swedge is a lip around the lug bolts that secure the drum. If the drums must be replaced you have two options. One is to use a swedge cutter (another one of those tools that are hard to find) to cut away the lip. And the other is to grind the heads off the lug bolts and press them out from behind. Fellow HAMB member **** Spadaro can fix you up with new drums and lug bolts. And some good advice if you need it.
my brake drum lathe can turn the drums mounted on the rear hubs...but it was made in 1941. check around a few shops and you will probably find someone who can too measure them first to see IF they can be turned
