Maybe it's just me, maybe only a local thing (Metro Detroit) but I've been noticing an awful lot of trash and blown tires on the freeways lately. Just replaced a tire on the daily and that wasn't cheap, developed another slow leak on it, and now I'm sayin WTF. It seems like for nearly the entire lenth of I-275 and most of I-696 there's an excessive amount of delaminated truck tires to add to the build up of general garbage. Local or everywhere? And what effect is it having on your hot rods?
I don't know about anyone else but I just don't drive my hot rod on the expressway if I can help it.....better drive and scenery on the side roads
Tire sales are down, people are running them to the end, failure, instead of relacing ahead of time. We sell tires to cheap people that come from China. The mid range tires are from Mexico. With the lower profile tires, that most newer cars have, they "look good" with 10 psi. This doesn't help the tire life. The general public is ignorant of tire maintenance. Around here the road conditions are really slipping away, too. Pot holes and craters are terrible. Interstates and State roads aren't taken care of like they used to. The counties and locals are doing OK. That's what I think. Frank
Funny you should mention this. My wife and I were just observing the other day how much the road is littered with debris lately and the shredded tires are at an all time high. Even with Michigan's famous terrible roads it seems to be on the increase. They are repairing a 10 mile stretch of I-75 south of here so I suspect the trash will disappear shortly.:rolleyes
yep ive noticed the same thing..alot of them being Truck tires..Good ol Michigan you know we have one of the highest weight limits on our highways..no wonder they are pounded into submission all the time. not to mention our freeze thaw cycles..they play hand to hand with the road distruction..
Your right,. If I remember right we have the highest allowable axle weight in the nation,...... I was just dragging home a 35 Coupe the yesterday and a couple times I thought the trailer bounce right off the road,.... seriously.
Same here, I avoid the Interstates like the plague. Our little short wheelbase car with friction shocks is no match for bridge transition joints that you can measure in inches. I hit one a couple of months ago and the jolt knocked a hub cap off. But Tennessee is still better than California is. CalTrans thinks that if a joint in the pavement doesn't break your windshield, it's smooth enough.
Ever since Mike Bloomberg became the Mayor of NYC the condition of the roads have become so bad it's unbelievable. He's a businessman and runs the city like it's NYC Inc. Cutting corners anywhere he can to save a buck. Huge pot holes and cracks everywhere... It's hard driving a brand new car around here, let alone a hot rod. I'm still waiting for someone to file a cl*** action law suit against the city for broken car parts and accidents due to the ****ty roads.
Wow, I thought I was just bein picky. I had to replace a tire on our H3, now I have a leaker on the other side. I really need to be cautious driving some of the cars we do here. Some of the holes in the side roads are big enuff for families to live in! And the delaminated truck tires...I slowed down last night to look and one of em had some substantial tread, almost like a new tire. Makes me think there's a technical problem with the recaps the big boys use. Had a bud from PA notice the same **** by him (Pittsburg). If not careful this can get costly.
Just received this in an e-mail, very interesting investigation on tires!! http://abcnews.go.com/Video/playerIndex?id=4826897
I know this isn't really tire related but here is my thoughts on it; I really noticed this on my trip to the Nats last weekend. For some reason, the I75 and I71 southbound lanes were WAAAAAY nicer then the northbound lanes. On the way down, there were only a couple instances where I hit a bridge transitions or potholes that I cursed about. However, on the way home, I got beat to death on the horrible roads. I can't count how many times i had to reopen my cowl vent. I had my inside p***enger door handle fall off and stuff in my trunk shifted enough to knock the handle off of my cooler battery box and the lid went for a short flight across the trunk. It was really bad. I seriously think that next near I'm gonna seek out a new route, at least for the trip home anyway. Vance
Just found the link doesn't work on here. Basically found that tires have been found to be as much as 12 yrs old when bought for new, learn to read and check the dates on new tires!!
here in minnesota we have been told that the reason we have poorly maintained ****py roads and bridges falling down is because we don't pay enough taxes. i'm sure taxes in michigan are low too minnesota's budget for welfare is 11.5 billion dollars , i guess they have other things to pay for
Out here if you are lost, you can tell how close you are to Down Town L.A. by checking either the size of the pothole OR the amount of blown truck tires along side the highway!!!!
yeah..maybe they ought to have those that are recieving that 11.5 billion dollars do something for that money..and a better system at proving they are elligible for the money in the first place, and Bi -annual audits on them and the system..and if they dont p*** the test they get to go to work to fix the roads they have ****ed the money out of..its just an idea..but than again you guys know im radical..My world is a nice place to live in, if you..have no problem being a productive citizen
My daughter just went through the agony of deflate on her little hoped up riceburrneer, Hit the pot hole, ( which one honey) and took out her tire and wheel in one clean pop. the good news is the state claims no responsibility unless she can show that someone complained at least 3 (thats right 3) months ago and they did not fix "that" pothole. Of course I can still take comfort in the fact that our illustrious govenor has seen fit over the last 3 years to move 500 mil (MILLION) from the transportation fund into funds for our poor teachers, indians, and lawyers. Funny thing is those are the same unbiased *****s that got him elected. MMMMMM. It would have been 750 mil. but someone actually had the balls to point out that the state is facing a 1.5 billion shortfall and maybe we should use that money for something else.?????? What about the f+++ing roads Einstien??? O well, at least we only pay the 3rd highest gas tax in the country. Oh, and by the way, if you have not already figured out my rant, the roads mostly **** alot here.
Arent we also one of the few states that allow recapped tires too... The problem i see is the dumb *** truck drivers will have a tire start to go and they just keep ****ing driving. Pleases the **** outta me when im on the scooter... Pisses me off when im in the car and i see it too. Your in luck though if you lived out by me you would have to dodge the dead deer too Dave
Took a trip from Dallas To SE Missouri about a month ago....I was dodging Tire carcuses all the way. Only ran over one and it didn't cause to much damage....not like the one I hit in South Texas...but that's another story. Them dead tires are dangerous.
Coming down I-40 in my A coupe a while back in the center lane all alone. Look up in the mirror and see some one coming up fast so I pulled over to the the outside lane so they could p***. Car started vibrating so bad I could't see. Took to the shoulder to stop and see what broke and it smooths up. I finished the trip in the inside lane.
With all due respect, Arkansas has some of the worst freeway surfaces I've ever driven on. It's like a state-wide railroad crossing. Vance
LMAO! Looks like we are all in the same boat. Roads here are bad and sounds like they are bad all over. The i-40 crosstown bridge here in the city is rated worst than the bridge that fell up north. It pops holes all the way through the deck at least once a month now. I never drive on it.
