I need to paint my exhuast manifolds. I plan on blasting them down to bare metal before I paint them. I also read somewhere that it is a good idea to heat them up to 200-300 degrees before you paint them. Any tips or tricks you can share? I was palnning on using VHT paint. Thanks, Todd
I blasted the***** out of them, then baked them in the oven at 400 for about an hour to take all of the moisture out of them, let them cool till they were warm then painted them. But I used eastwood's manifold paint. Results were great because the Eastwood stuff made them look like a brandnew fresh casting.
Cans of VHT come with good instructions on how to heat and paint properly. Fllow them as best you can and you should be in good shape.
if you want to do this on the cheap....here's what i did. i never even took my manifolds off my engine i just masked off everything around them. they were rusty, so i wire brushed them the best i could. then, i used some flat black bbq grill paint. (good for 1800 degrees according to the can.) after spraying them with one good coat, i let them air dry. i put on a second coat, and started the engine...and i let it get up to temp. which baked the paint on. they have been painted like this for 5 years...and they look as good now as they did the day i painted them. this cost me about $7.00 to do.....and it's held up great so far. the only down side is that you have to want flat black manifolds. again, this is just a way to do it on the cheap...but the eastwood stuff is awesome.
