I'm wanting to buy a nine inch rear for $150 off of a 59 F-100, but was wondering if anyone knows what the gear ratio range was for these, I've heard that these old trucks were geared pretty low, which is what I am looking for. Preferably somewhere between 3:50's to 4:10's Thanks for any help you all can give, I do appreciate it
I got a 1960 F100 six cylinder and it runs a stock 3.9:1 ratio nine inch diff and the V8 had a 3.7:1 ratio, I had heard that some 1959 F100's had 4.11:1 diffs, but that was probably in sixes again not V8's. Ok there is a start for you, I am sure some other f100 nuts will come on and give you a similar story to confirm what you need to know. Got to say it really will depend on several things including tire diameter and engine selection and for that matter tranny if you had an O/Drive.
If it is still in the truck ... ... then try to read the tag ... it should just be a simple tag with the ratio stamped into it. It will be where this diagram shows but the tag will be a lot less complex than the tag shown If it is out of the truck ... and the housing ... simply count the teeth ... divide the large number by the small number and there you are.
also depends if it had a automatic or overdrive trans..most will be..my 65 has 3.25.because it is an overdrive truck.....but my donor for my 28 luckly had the 4.11s i wanted.
Easy rule of thumb to check a diff ratio is jack up one rear wheel only. Put a chalk mark on the side of the jacked wheel and a mark on the ground so they line up and similarly do the same with the drive shaft and the 3rd member. Then just rotate the wheel one full turn and count accurately how many times the drive shaft turns. What ever the number of turns, then multiply it by 2, that will be a very close and quick way to work out your diff ratio.
I have a 9" out of a '58 F-100 that had a 292 Y-Block. 3.70 axle ratio & a tag on the rear to prove it.
