    Hello fellow Rodders,

I had the opportunity to visit the remains of the junk yard on Kauai and shoot a few pics. I thought you guys might enjoy them. I have to admit I was pleased to see the earth take back the iron. In the desert we can burry a engine block for years and it only seasons it, yet on the edge of the island cast iron blocks, cranks, axles ect were being reclaimed at an amazing rate. They looked like fossils or petrified wood. I wouldn’t expect any of this to still be there in another 20 years.

The last pic is a close up of “ Glass Beach” just a little down current. It was created by the windshields, houseware glass, pottery, ceramic, aluminum and other debris from the junk yard that washed out to sea. It was broken up, polished and washed back by the current to create an amazing beach of glass.

    Cheers,
    Andy

Lived in Hawaii for almost 8 or 9 years. A year in Japan and such. That is a very cool group of pics. The only info missing is the fact that it is at the end of a lava flow. :) It is very true that the "yards" are dead today. Now they have warehouses. They strip the car of all good parts, label them, and put them on shelves. Anything left to the elements since the '50's is rotted to shit.

Hell, I've seen origional old hotrod car(s) built in Hawaii in shows. Not pretty. Lots of bondo(or as they call it in the islands BUNDO).

They still have (last I knew 3 yrs ago), a drag strip on north shore Oahu. Granted these folks are limited, but they got balls the size of Eurasia!! Great people as long as you aren't white and sticking around. Just my experience.

Thanks for posting the cool pics! Interesting how Mother Nature deals with man-made things?

  13. Kauai is probably my favorite spot on earth. Been there a few times. I always stay in Princeville. You can`t really describe it -- you just need to go there.

Oh . . . a good vat will clean those blocks right up ! ;)

I agree with you 100% on Kaui. Plenty of small towns with no tourists.
Is the drag strip in the pics the one just past Kekaha? I was there in 1989 doing my usual aimlessly wandering around the island and stumbled on a poster for drag races on that day. We went to the strip and it was like a step back in time. Run what you brung type of stuff i.e. a lot of locals in hopped up ex rental datsuns & toyotas along with some bracket type cars and a few real serious drag cars. It was a great time with the locals barbqueing fish and pigs and lot of partying. Kaui has lots of great friendly people as long as you leave the city at home and show up with and "island attitude" and you don't try to hornswaggle their waves!!!

My sister-in-law lives in Princeville. And for that reason alone, I figure I'll never see the island of Kauai!!! She's a scary person...Damn, what rotten luck, as the island sounds spectacular.

You can drive up the California coast to Fort Bragg, California along Highway 1 and there is a beach like that with old car parts rusting away in the surf.

  27. Last time i was in Kauai, I went to Niihau, "The Forbidden Island". Privately owned, pure Hawaiin people, untouched beaches, like the islands were 100 yers ago. Awesome.

Interesting....The island is owned by an Irish family that felt bad for the ol' US taking the nation of Hawaii from them in '59. I don't know how you got there, but I know that if you aren't full blooded or part blooded and invited for an event, you aren't welcome there(from what I heard, but I could give a crap).

I think the US taking those islands is the best thing that could have happened to them. They'd be a territory of Japan, and not able to collect welfare(as most of them do) if it wasn't US soil.

  29. If you find one of these... let me know...!;)

  30. Great picts.
I've never been to Kaui, but it just so happens the missus and I are going next week!
Anymore info on where that beach is or any other cool spots, I'd love to hear about 'em.

    (don't mean to hijack...)
