anybody running factory power steering on thier 53-54 chevy? just wondering how you like it.. hows the road feel? I just sold some parts to a guy with a 49 who bought the whole setup from a 54 to put on his car. just wondering if it is a worthwhile expense....
I know one guy who has it, and he likes it. My 55 desoto has a simlar setup, with the pump on the back of the generator. I haven't actually driven it but for about 100 feet though.
Had one on the old sedan delivery that I installed from a 53 . All p/str setups were for a/t cars only . We had to change the shifter shafts and arms that bolt to the top of the column to make it work on the 3 spd. The weak link on these is the pitman arm. Took ours out when the arm broke while going down a hill. still have it minus the pitman and it was all rebuilt just before we put it in. They only work with a 6 cyl.
I've been looking for a power steering kit for my 54 chevy belair no 1 sells one I;ve been to numerous shops and they say i'll look into it,never call back,so when i go in they say if you pick one up i'll install it. much appriciate some good advise, feel stuck cant enjoy my ride!!!
Two year only stuff I think. And looks to me like Chevy only. Not BOP, theres looks different. Pump might be the same. My 54 has factory setup came with the car. It made putting Fentons on an interesting job. It works well, not a one finger power steer like the big barges. and highway speeds is fine. Very tight, no slop, no wander. And the steering gear is lubed separatly from the power portion. Gear oil in the box. And grease the front end every 1000 miles. Wow, closed auction, $2095 and you don't even know if it works!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jamco sells a kit for putting PS into the 49-54 car. You would need to chop the column, or replace it with a later model column. Works with the stock frontend. A whole lot less than $2095 too...
Had a 54 convert that had PS and it was nice to drive. Last PS unit I had sold for $150 and was glad to get that. 15 years ago.
I ***ume when you say Fentons you're talking about manifolds and not wheels correct? I might have to try and track a unit down for my car. If it's not a one finger type that should mean that it has pretty decent road feel.
