I've reversed the eyes on the main leaf. Was thinking of de-arching the springs as well. A bit of a *****, considering there are 7! And I ***ume that the main leaf would just conform to the other 6 since the spring tension is greater on the rest of the pack. Is this correct? Also, de-arching makes them longer (not, literally), but as far as the position of the eyes. Right? Are de-arched springs shortened to compensate for this? Or is it OK to swing the shackle backwards when mounting? Or does this screw **** up?
Yes in de-arcing and also reversing the eyes, the spring is "longer" and may need to be shortened. What type of springs are you working on?
De-arching makes them longer and depending on how great the original arch is you'll have a problem. May be easier to go to a truck spring shop and have shorter main leafs made up. Also, on any parallel leaf spring car, the axle moves (wheelbase) changes as the spring is either flattened or curled up tighter when the car goes around a corner. The point is, the shackle has to have some leeway to swing so don't take it all the way to end when you hook up your newly de-arched springs and call it good or they might bind.
When you're driveing and the spring compresses it is the same as when you de-arch it isn't it? Just thought I'd throw you some food for thought.
I had my main leafs flipped and de-arched on my '53 210, and there were no problems with the shackles. There WAS a problem, however, with the leafs hitting the frame at the front because the reversed eye brought the spring too close at the front mount. Other than the clunk, though, it rode fine and handled great. I then put Posies super slides on my car, which have a reversed eye at the back and a standard eye at the front, which jacks the leafs at a funny angle and messed up my handling and did nothing to help my ride. (Although there is now no "klunk" when I put it into drive, which I guess is nice.) What I'm saying is, have you driven it with the flipped main leaf? It will hit the frame unless you modify the frame or the front mount.
I had a shop de-arch and shorten my springs. Now I have a set of Posies. He didn't do the math and ended up screwing it all up. I am much happier now. Worth the $ imho.
Got 3 inch blocks in now. Haven't put her back together with modified leafs yet. I'm gonna kick myself in the *** if it doesn't drop at least another inch. I can handle the KLUNK, as long as it looks cool
I would ditch the 1 3/4" springs in favor of something 2". Front Ramcharger springs fit well. You fab new mts.
I de-arched mine 2" on my 54, and then added blocks to get her down more. No problems with the springs.
