Hey guys I'm gonna be running hop ups from Langdons on my 218 very soon (ordered tonight).
2 carter 2bbls, offy intake, split langdon headers.

I need help picking mufflers! Noise is no issue, but I want a good true 50's hot rod exhaust tone.
I plan on using Langdons' recommendations:
2" pipe from manifolds to mufflers, 1 3/4" pipe from mufflers to back bumper.
What mufflers do you guys recommend for a cl***ic, loud flathead hot rod sound?
He said short gl***packs with little round holes inside (maramount or cherry bombs?). What length?
He also said, mufflers mounted as far forwards as possible.
    Any comments?

    Thanks!

The only mufflers I use on Kustom cars...Brockman Mellowtones! He'll make them for you in any length, with gl***, steel or no packing inside.

  4. I have Smithys on my '39 and they sound gret - '55 Dodge 230, +.060, Edgy cam, 2 Carters on Edmunds intake, Fenton head, and Langdon headers.

  6. Run two inch all the way to the back with no muffs. Sounds awesome.

I also like the Brockman Mellowtones, which I have on my '55 Buick (264). In addition to sounding great, they are compact and seamless which means hopefully I will not have to replace them any time soon due to corrosion. They really make the little nailhead sound good. Can't remember how much I paid, but they weren't too expensive.

Ok...it looks like either 18" (the shortest they make right?) Cherry Bombs,
or 22" (shortest I can find) Smithys.

    Which gets your votes?

How much of a volume/tone difference will there be between the two?

I'd run the 18" Cherry Bombs...I had a set on my '59 Rambler V8...2 inch all the way back sounded great...Then I wrecked it playing in the mud...I miss that car.

Brockman Steel packs. Have run them on my Olds for 25 years. Still sound great.

I run Brockman Mellow-Tone steel packed mufflers on all our Flathead V8's with Red's Headers. They make the best music...

Sounds awesome. I'm still really debating between running gl***packs or straight pipes. How loud is it really? Too loud to be comfortable cruising? Or so bad*** its worth doing?

Well I think its bad***, everybody says it sounds like an old war plane. I've just been waiting for johnny law to tag me for it though. Guys at work said they could hear me getting on the highway which is about a mile away from my work if that tells ya anything.

I've got a small video on youtube of it shooting flames, its not the best quality but its all I can find of it with the duals.

  23. My 54 panel sounds good but every now and then I block off the lakepipes and exit the spent gases through the muffler...kinda like having too much of a good thing...like I said feel free to come up and check it out sometime and hear it for yourself...just up the road a bit

my '50 has dual carbs and split exhaust, and it's runnin' dual straight pipes. no mufflers.
believe it or not, when you get in it, it sounds good, and when i cruise the freeway at 75 or 80 mph (constant speed) it is very quiet. at an idle, it pops just a little, that flathead has a nice, distinctive sound.

    Thanks for the input.
I can't decide if I want to do straight pipes or not.
Maybe I'll try it out, and if I don't like it, then put in the shortest cherry bombs I can find right below the collectors.

straight pipes are great on 6 cyls..
try it that way,,if you think its too loud, you can always go back and put on gl***packs or steelpacks..
another thing i heard was to use a split manifold, run one straight pipe and one gl***pack as close to the engine as possible,,,anyone else ever heard of doing this?
