After spending the time i did to paint my 53 i can't blame him for wanting to protect it.. I took a pretty good stone to the hood of it this year, that also bounced off my chopped windshield..left it's mark on my hood, luckily didn't break the windshield..
It's gotten it's share or chip's in the hood the past few year's since i finished it..but i look at it as that's what happens when you drive them. Suck's but oh well.
I wouldn't use a bra or anything myself, but can't say i blame someone if they chose to.

    Amen my friend

  3. OK, several things here:

    1. Driving a car you want $70K to Bville from Minnesota is insane. I live in UT, and have lived in ALL the surrounding states, and CA drivers have nothing on us! My hats off to ya.

    2. If you are gonna do the "bra" thing take it from me cover more of your car - seriously. Again I live in this area and you may get chips from tip to tail. I am saying around the windshield, middle of hood, etc. I have chips on the backslope of my trunk!

    3. Think about covering that interior, because it sucks to try to get salt out of carpet and upholstery seams.

    4. You're from Minnesota so you understand salt and rust... It's just multiplied @ Bville.

    5. Lastly, nice car.

  4. I probably shouldn't tell ya that 2 months ago we had the sealant heat up on the roads, stick to car tires, ripping fist size pieces of the highway up, and tossing them at cars either, huh?

  5. Thats really too bad. I enjoy reading your tech articles but this just shows a lack of class and tact. Obnoxious doesn't need to be shown here. Dial it back. You make the rest of the board look bad.

  7. Well,,I believe in drivin' the cars I have and rock chips are something that IS gonna happen.

I have never used a bra on any of my cars,,,but to be honest,,,I think I would use one before I would use tape,,,

The bras that are custom fit might be ugly but the tape looks gay,,,no offence intended,,,I just looks bad,,,and I can't believe it would do much to protect the paint. HRP

I have seen articles on some other forums about people doing this with blue tape its the easy release tape so heat doesnt bother it like it does masking tape thats why people use it when assembling painted cars.

I'd be carefull. it's okay if it stays dry. If it gets wet and the sun beats on it the tape easy release or not will bubble the paint underneath. We've fixed several cars at the shop where I work that someone had taped for whatever reason and got their paint bubbled. we just had to redo the underside of a 34 cause the body guy thought he was slick taping it off while he painted the top side and then wet sanded and buffed. he forgot to take it off and it sat in the shop over a long weekend and come monday when he peeled it the paint was thrashed. Not trying to bust your idea, we all want to try and preserve our stuff by any means possible. I'd just hate for you to be posting in a couple of weeks about how you now have to paint the front of your car. Just my two cents.

  10. At least there will be something to wipe the ass with if an emergency roadside dump is needed. Sticky side out, of course.

I see worse things happening with the tape then rock chips. Of you are that worried about it and want 70k, put it in a enclosed trailer and don't take it to Bonneville.

I'll bet 3M is pissed cause he called their masking tape" easy off". I have seen more paint screwed up from putting tape on it and leaving it to long, getting it wet and then pulling bigger chips off of the primer becaused is not preped good or they tried something to harsh to take it off when it has dried and baked on. Plus it looks BUTT UGLY. If your worried about chips check with your paint supplier about some things being done at the OEM level. Flex in your clear and Ford used a coating on several of their cars that worked pretty good.

  16. When the dust - and rocks - settle we'll have an answer as to how well it worked out.

I hope the answer gets posted no matter what happens.

Along with a little story about the trip, roads, weather etc....

I asked him when I saw him at B'ville and he said it started coming off by itself and by Omaha he pulled what was remaining off.

I wondered. I was half way home before I remembered I was going to look for the car while I was there. Glad the tape didn't hurt the paint.

The intent was something quick that would be on the car for about 24 hours, ripped off an tossed. Quite frankly, with project creep the car came out a little better than expected and the paint a better than expected...So I'd like to keep it that way as long as possible.

Earlier this year I took a rock to the windshield. Actually probably better that I got a star, than it hitting fender as it would have been fairly severe and more costly to fix.

I'd try it again. the Duct tape should have been all vertical, it would have held better. I had a few pieces starting to lift off the blue tape. Not wanting to risk it, and the fact the roads were fairly clean, I pulled it off the front end. It came off real clean. I kept it on the rear fenders as these really get hammered.

We did hit a dust storm in Cheyenne, and took a nice hit to a grille bar with something, and it definately has a few new chips.

Thanks for the report back. Remember one thing, most of us will never have a bad thought of a car that nice with a few well earned chips.
