Denise you must have some sort of vision in your head on what you want the car to look like. Go with the flow and teach us a lesson! For us to agree all upon a color is ludicrous! [IMG] If I were you, I would hit up Dave's collection at socalcarculture.com and browse the enormous pallette at your disposal. Theres A TON of great colors and Dave has a real eye for quality cars in my opinion.

I think if you decide to carson top it and go the custom route, the copper is a bitchin color. I personally could see any deep candy metallic looking good on your car... Just make sure it looks DEEP like staring down at the ocean off the face of a mexican cliff. Nothing beats that! [IMG]

Not very orginal on my end, but for my chevelle, there was only 1 color... black. On the '36, I have wanted it to be flat black for 5 years. Dad wants it gloss black with the apple green stripe, cause that the orginal color. As a nod to him and his history with the car, my flames (which he hates) will be striped in apple green. I have entertained the notion of painting it a copper color someday, but for now, I WANT it flat black.

On the other end of the spectrum, if I end up keeping (stuck with) my BLACK Fairlane Squire wagon, then I may paint it copper flake with rootbeer flake in the woodgrain area.

I also want a do a car in blue flake someday. What that car will be is as of yet undetermined.

I'm sure NONE of that was helpful to you Denise. [IMG]

  5. .....Ever seen "Glenn"s dark pearl green 48 Buick on the HAMB? The paint color just oozes class and the high metallic hi-lights the curves of the body.. You wanna hi-light your body curves, doncha?

it's a gut feeling. i knew my 65 had to be metallic, and bright, and that kinda pointed me solely to a pagan goldish color. went to the paint shop, chrysler's inca gold pearlescent was waaaay too much, went back a few decades in the books looking for a metallic gold that my grandpa's old truck was, and found that war bonnet yellow color that my car is in the 71 corvette section. started with a gut feeling, picked a color to match! a dark green with appropriate metallic in it to really light it up in the light would be pretty damned cool on the olds i think. i love dark greens.

i was just about to say that [IMG]..

seriously though, i liked the copper idea. howabout that copper someone said they just had their A-hole dipped in?? [IMG] i like that color.

you should get ahold of JEEM, he is great with colors, i'll bet Brush would be of some help in this department too. it's definately not an easy thing to decide on. we went through about 10 different ideas on the Bug before we settled on Black and LimeTime, it turned out good. on the 47 Chevy it's gonna be a slightly lighter blue than the original. mostly because it'll go with the mint (condition) interior and i want to keep this one simple and not get carried away. i'm changin the shade cause i'm not the biggest fan of Navy blue (it's curent shade), but i do like blue. i've been toyin with ideas for paint on my 83 Chevy (Donzie's old beater [IMG]) and have yet to decide. not that it matters, i have'nt got the time or the money to do anything with it [IMG]...

i guess what i'm trying to say is.... GOOD LUCK!! [IMG]

I'll check out the site for ideas, thanks.

I'm NOT asking for a color choice, I'll be making that decision. My question is HOW you guys choose the color. Did you already know what color you wanted before you even started the project? Did the color hit you like a slap in the face the minute you saw it and you knew right then and there that was the color?? Did your wife pick it out? Was it the color on your favorite can of beer??? [IMG]

HOW, HOW, HOW did you choose

I decided I wanted an "In your face" bright, see it from the fifth row back in a parking lot while driving down the street color and that's how and what I picked out. It could have been green or purple (my choice prior to seeing the blue) or orange, that wasn't the criteria.

On my '60 Elky I'm looking for a cool color, or colors, leaning toward a midnight blue, that might be at least close to something that was possible in the 60s.
That's why I've ruled out mica pearls (unless that's all I can get) and flip flop Cameleon colors.
I am also planning on the Elky being my primary transportation so it's gotta be repairable without reshooting the whole damn thing just to fix one rock chip.
So no three stage urethane "systems" on this one.
It says "Painted with Acrylic Lacquer" on the color code badge on the firewall and I'm hoping to keep it that way, only a different color...
Oh, It's getting a silver flake roof...already have the flake! [IMG]

  12. Listen to this..........I hate blue, always say that. Also alway say..........oooohhhhhhhh, there is a cool blue! Got a good deal on a gallon of paint, blue paint. My pops thought it was too dark and suggested light blue which is what we sprayed............Carla hates it, I like it! Guess I get the car when I kick her out [IMG]

Denise, i will tell you how i chose the color for my car. I had a couple different ideas like you have. I thought and thought and thought. One day dad brought a paint book home and i narrowed it down to about 5 different shades of what i wanted. Then when we went to the riverfront rod run in Paducah i was walking around and BOOM! there it was. A 48 Chevy truck with the exact color i wanted. I asked the guy what it was off of. Later i found out it was actually one of the 5 that i had picked out from the paint chips. There ya have it.

  14. Oooohhhhhhhh... welp, I look for cars with similar body shapes to mine and judge how they look in their color. So far, I've disregarded about every color I've seen on mid/late 40's GM cars at shows.
I think I've settled on a Dove gray, non metallic because it looks classy on a fat fendered car if you slam the livin shit outta it....Wide whites on painted steelies help.
I talked my buddy, Tom into painting his 56 F-100 that color and I drove it to BTT-50's lst year.. Loved the paint!

Don't criticize me, but I saw a really neat, more yellowy and not so brownish gold color on a PT Snoozer today. Turned my head twice, and that's not normal for me.

Personally I'm going with a lighter blue. Just gotta figure out how to take my car's original color, darken it about 6 shades, and candy-fy it so I can spray it over some silver bassboat flake.

The chopped 51 Merc in the shop right now came with a 1953 copy of Rod & Custom in the front seat. On the cover is a Merc with the color my customer wanted. Soooo, I sent him to the new-car stores, and he returned with a code.
Most of the time, they come to me with their mind made up and I proceed to change it for them [IMG] Looks like you're gonna save me some time and effort there!

I painted mine gray primer with a white roof because I wanted the most reflective colors I could find for the 120* heat.

  19. I was walking in a parking lot one day and I realised that I really like the blues on a lot of the import cars now days. I would just add a little metal flake and your all set, I'm actually thinking about painting my essex that mazda blus with a little flake when the time comes.Anyways, please don't lynch me for posting import pics on the HAMB, its for a illustrative purposes only!!! Denise, I paint a lot of cars for a lot of guys, and color choice is the toughest thing to do. I start by trying to guide them into using a color that compliments the shape and size of the car. Big cars look BIGGER if painted a light color. They look smaller a dark color. If you're looking for a hot rod look, brighter colors scream that. A big classy car, like a Caddy, or Buick (Olds?) looks good in a darker, classy color, if you like understatement. The shape of the car also matters. Rounded cars look good in candy and pearls, cause they have so many curves to reflect light off the custom paint, and give you many shades of your color, and highlights of the pearlescence.
OK, so we have a big classy car, very round, and your favorite color is purple? I always try to get people to pick a color they really LIKE, and can live with for a long time, if they plan on keeping the car. If purple is what you can live with, I would mix a custom base of a dark grey, like HOK galaxy grey, mixed with black , or black pearl to darken it up more. Then put on the candy purple. If it isn't colorful enough for you, try mixing in some red or blue ( or both) interference pearl with the candy. If you want more pearl look, put the pearls on top of the candy. If you want real 'show-biz' mix in some mini or ultra mini flake into the candy, though you might lose some depth, if you overdo it. Paint some test panels to check color. I've mixed, and painted as many as 12 gallon thinner cans to get the right mix, shade and color for a car. Mark each can with the mix, and how many coats, how much pearl you used, etc. so you can duplicate the color you want later. Take your test panels and view them in different lighting situations, flourescents, cloudy days, but most important, outside in the sun! You'd be surprised how many color choices are made without even seeing a tiny color chip, in the sunshine! You need to see the color on a larger panel, in it's natural surroundings...so if it's a show car, look at in under flourescents, and HID lighting.
Good luck, it's the toughest thing you'll so, but color and paint really MAKE the car.

Saw one of the news Chevy small SUV's (Can't remember what they call them, ugly little suckas) with a really unique purple on it.
If I paint my next project, that's what it's going to be.
Still think your Olds would look great copper with a white top, WWW and Caddy caps.
What's the story on the 'cuse? Did you talk dad into it?

Usually I have a mental picture of the car in my head and I try to get as close to it as possible. I always try visualizing the car, be it at the local cruise or coming out of work and seeing it sit out in the parking lot shining in the sun.

Picture Big Olds sitting out in front of the house or cruising down Woodward, What color is he?

Those fat fender's look sexy with rich, metalic color's. Copper's, fawn's and gold tone's. Black look's lower, serious and never fail's.

I agree with that one. The olds would look fabulous in those colors.
I picked my colors from what was originally pictured in my head well before I started them.
The problem with me is.......I'M COLORBLIND. [IMG]
I always wanted a color which stands out. Those metalic colors would definitely do it for the big bad olds.

I like you copper idea if it was HOK Kandy rootbeer with a gold base. On a car with lines and curves like that Kandys really seem to shine and show depth. So my vote would be copper or the #1 color for any car or truck BLACK. Try not to think so hard about it though thats what makes color choises so hard(2 1/2 years of thinking about it [IMG])
