How about these 2 Pin Stripes from the Weber Wagon Company, 1919. Their names are lost to history but they look like they had a busy day in front of them.
And to all of you Von Dutch haters out there, just remember that without Dutch, his attitude and all his strange behavior non of us would be doing what we do. (Profesional, full time pinstripers) Sure maybe Tommy The Greek was a better Striper then Dutch, but with the eye ball glued to his fore head and brushes hanging out of his ears Dutch was a natural for the magazines of the time that ate that shit up, he was a "Weirdo" and in turn brought a ton of attention to the art (considered a craft before Dutch) of wild Pin Striping in the other wise tight assed 50's!.
So, wheather you like him or not show a little fucking respect for the guy who paved the way to allow you to make money doing what you do. Without the antics of guys like Von Dutch Stripers would be little more then these 2 poor fuckers, craftsman at the end of an assembly line, making your 60 cents a day.

Chaz is killing it. Super nice guy as well. Dig your stuff too Skratch.

  5. A couple of comments - First to those that say "there's only one" or something similar, pull your head out, it's art and there really can't be a best!

Von Dutch - Without him Pinstriping wouldn't be what it is today. Sure some of his stuff was out there and many times not very consistent, but he was/is very important. A friend had his car striped and a "cartoon" done on his 32 in 56 or 57. After he got it back, he took some lacquer thinner and took the art off! Left the striping.

Herby Martinez - Mentioned a lot here. I remember when he was starting to show around So Cal a lot and many of us wondered "Will he make it?" He Did !

Hot Dog - Did the grille on my red coupe, at the Mooneyes Xmas party one year in Whittier. I re did the car, and hung the grille on the wall - it's art man.

Doug Dorr - again remember him starting and thinking , Hmmm I don't know. Boy he has progressed and become pretty damn good. Have a couple of his original art panels and Kool Tools that he did.

Phil Whetstone/Miracle Design Santa Ana, CA - Probably the least appreciated striper/sign guy around. Incredible work, did the Gold Leaf on my C.O.E. and the subtle stripes on my black coupe. Been at it for easily 30+ years. was on the Barry White TV show a couple times and has done many old F.E.D. restorations. Also does stuff for Art Chrisman, that oughta tell you something. And his striper's Xmas party's are legendary!

Charles Babbitt (RIP) aka Ed G. Farnsworth, aka Shaky Jake was my all time favorite and used to come into the Store I worked at in the 70's and stripe cars inside the store in front of a crowd. Your Cal Look VW wasn't shit if it didn't have some Shaky Jake lines.

Anyone remember Kim and Ed's Art in Fullerton? It's where the Rat Fink reunion started!

  6. Bob bond
Tommy the Greek and Kenny Howard

I's sure bond is still alive, I'm not sure about the greek but I liked his style the best and well Kenny is with my Ol' Man, in the afater life place of your choice.

  7. well there are way to many to just list 3, but i will say the best are the ones that do it becuase they love to do it. it doesnt matter if its a part time thing for them. as long as they love to do it and do it well. I know i aint the best but i know i do my work well, and guess what i got a day job!!!! go figure???!!!!
Art comes from within and should not be criticized or judged. and if someone likes to do it full time or part time well thats up to them. and really anyone that thinks they are the shit needs to check themselves because if you are truly a real artist, every day is a learning experience and we all have alot to learn....

do it becuase you love it, not becuase you have to........

  19. I just re-read this post for the first time in awhile;lots of good names added.I guess I could probably list about a hundred or so and still would forget someone.A couple more names out of the past from the Right Coast:

Warren Alessi - Don Penttila - Richie Canto - Davey Jones - John Hartnett - Bruce Cambriello - Jim Garballey(who taught at Butera School of Art in Boston for many years).

A lot of up and coming guys as well: Jessie Accaccia and Don Fearon whose uncle and father were two of the best gold leaf men on the East Coast for years;sadly both are gone now.

Another who doesn't get mentioned a lot is Shane Syx(his real name)from the Dayton Ohio area. This guy is not only a fantastic airbrush artist but is one of the fastest and most accurate stripers I've ever worked with. And one of the nicest people you will ever meet.

Another great airbrush artist and striper now sadly retired is my good friend Bob Seeburger from Adrian MI.We worked together for several years and he never ceased to amaze me with his lettering and freehand airbrush work.A great striper as well but he never enjoyed doing it.

Ray Drea was mentioned awhile ago.I had the pleasure of meeting Ray in Chicago last January and got to see some of his fantastic work. One of the greatest panels he did was a picture of a Deuce roadster in shades of red with a wild symmetrical stripe design that actually curved around the car.Really hard to describe but unreal.I believe his main work is designing custom paint schemes for Harley-Davidson.

Speaking of Chicago;that is one place where there is more talent in one city than there is in a lot of states!Come to the Brushmasters get together next January and see them in action.

Anyway I'm ranting again.Again thanks to all of you out there who are keeping the brushes wet and the trade alive. STRIPE ON!!!!!

    There is only one!

    The Great Legend Himself!

Jim "Dauber" Farr and His Dog Sam, Cincinnati, OH

Top Painter, Bill Reoul aka "Short Round" Cinncinnati, OH

Don't believe me, just check out the paint on the Rod Shop cars from the late 60's to the early 70's

Seen those cars run at the Dallas International Drag Strip in Dallas, TX 1970 SpringNationals.

The Stickel and Riffel Anglia was as bad as they needed to be.

    Looked Great and Ran Better!

    Thanks Dauber and Short Round!

You guys are and still "The Bomb"

Russ is too cool! I was thrilled and honored to get a chance to film him in "action', while he was stripin' in Sturgis last week. Man, he is a master... Daytona, Laconia Sturgis to name a few. He has to be the BEST bike rally striper I have ever seen... fast, accurate & flawless! He has an amazing history... he sets the bar by being excellent at everything... striping, lettering, graphics and fine art. He also has a history of motorcycle racing and was a helicopter pilot in Vietman. What an artist and talent. "GRAYBEARDS RULE!"... Thanks Russ!
