What year did the 261 go to full oil pressure? I found a guy that told me he'd sell me one for $300 dollars but I'm not sure what year it is, I'm going to use the casting numbers from inliners to determine the year model this evening but I don't know what year the engines went full pressure can anyone help me out? any suggestions for things to look for? anything that would be a deal breaker?

Lee is correct on 58. If the engine is sound it's worth 300.00 no matter what year it is. The full flow conversion is not a difficult task. I have done it on 2 261's a 54 and a 57. Go to www.stovebolt.com and go to tech tips and click on engine then scroll down to the full pressure article. It is well written with good pictures.
261's are getting hard to find.

All 261s have a fully pressurized oiling system. Do you mean full flow filtration?

I am sure thats what he is talking about. The article in the stovebolt site is about the full flow filter conversion.

Alright so I am somewhat confused about this. All of the 261's have oil pressure (ie not dipper motors) but after '58 they have a full flow oil filter? right?

59-63 261's are full flow and have the 1/2" NPT oil line connections on the block.

Some will tell you they started in '58 based on casting date codes, but what they forget is that they start making the next years model, the year before. In other words, the casting date is by calendar year, not model year. A late '58 date code would have actually been a '59 model.
