I have a 61 Special with the 215. She sat for 30 years and I was running her for a couple weeks with no trouble. I had to flush the coolant as it became gummed up, but the motor was drained all these years and it looked clean. Two weeks ago it blew out the oil filter gasket dumping the oil after a 5 mile drive. I put another filter on hoping it was something simple. But I just started her, and she blew the gasket right away and dumped the gallon of oil on the driveway. I suspect the oil p***ages are clogged (duh), but I was wondering if any Buick folks have seen this before? Could it be something in the front cover? any commonly plugged galleys I can try? I don't know where to look, and if I'm going to pull this engine, I plan to have a replacement ready to install.
Your pressure relief valve in the pump may be stuck. The pump on these is external, so pretty simple to R&R without major dis***embly.
yup, the plunger probably corroded after sitting and is now stuck, most oil pumps produce much more pressure then the engine can actually use, the valve allows the excess pressure to bleed off back into the pan. if the valve sticks, especially with cold oil it can blow oil everywhere and even blow off the filter.
First I checked if I doubled the gasket -wasn't the problem. Fram filter -yes, I took the Fram off and replaced with a Delco. I'll take the oil pump apart next weekend. Hopefully that's the problem. Thanks!
Also--probably has a relief valve in filter adaptor, necessary since small full-flow filters do not have capacity enough when cold or at high flow.
