Hello all, Just got done rebuilding my master cylinder in a 1950 Plymouth SD has a flat 6 in it. Started her up and now get a weird clanking noise almost like a loose motor mount. The noise is coming from the ****** and when I push the clutch in it makes a screeching noise. I drained the old fluid out of it and started it dry and it made no noise at all. Added new 80/90 gear grease and the terrible noise is back not sure what it could be? The clanking noise has always been there and goes away at higher rpm, the screeching noise is new and only when i push the clutch in and gets faster and higher pitched when the rpms increase. Thanks Ryan
Hard to say, might be a ring gear or flywheel issue. Funny it would run dry without any noises. You might be able to remove the starter and turn it over and examine the flywheel and ring gear for fit and wear. Check the flywheel bolts too. I had one come loose and it did make a screeching sound and I was able to tighten it back up without removing the trannie and bell. Good luck, it might be something simple.
Is the clutch linkage connected in anyway with the master cylinder ? Screeching with the clutch pushed in could be the throw out bearing. Running with no lube = no noise very strange. Not a real good thing to do for very long.
Did you actually engage trans without fluid? If yes then that is bad. If no then it is not moving inside at all. Sounds like a throw out bearing to me.
Screeching while the clutch pedal is depressed sounds like a throw out bearing. Weird, but sometimes its like you fix one thing and in fixing that you mess with the car's karma and a string of other mechanically unrelated problems come up.
Make sure all 4 of the transmission to bell housing bolts are tight. I found a 53 Plymouth that did the same thing and the bolts had backed out allowing the trans to hang at a bit of an angle. Replaced the throwout bearing anyway, but the one I took out was good. Shoulda just tightened up the bolts and gave the guy his throwout bearing back....
Well found the problem, took off the flywheel cover, and all the bolts were loose around the flywheel. Now I guess that means dropping the tranmission and taking off the clutch to get to them. Thanks for the help all looks like a got quite the project ahead of me. Woot
