I've read all the replies through page 2 before adding my thoughts. I haven't listed anything on HAMB, got the impression that you need to establish some kind of track record before you do, eBay is another story, been there for 5 years. Before eBay there were swap meets and face to face deals. I've never understood how you could misrepresent stuff, you can sell **** or NOS parts, and people will buy both if they know upfromt what it is. Mint and cherry are ice cream flavors and sould never be used to discribe auto parts. Surface rust in South Dakota is different that surface rust in Maine. Rust pits in one will fill with primer, otheres will take two coats of Bondo, be truthful with your discription, the buyer will see it eventually.
The only packageing item you should spend money on is tape, and don't be cheap on using it. Your local hardware store should have all the free boxes you need. Look around for other stores that get things in bubble wrap and styrofoam peanuts, stock up on this stuff if you plan to be shipping stuff. PVC pipe is great for shipping trim pieces.
Priority Mail is great for items up to 5 pounds, and the boxes are FREE! Over 5 pounds I like to use FedEx Ground. They both have websites so you can tell the buyer what shipping will cost. As a seller I feel that I should get the item to the buyer as quickly as possable for the least amount of shipping. This eliminates the brown truck people that sponsor the #88 Nextel car(no name mentioned).
Years ago I bought a NOS piece of 1937 Harley literature, and it was mailed to me in a Flat Rate Priority mail envelope. I was ten feet from my mail box the day it arrived, and saw the mailman FOLD IT and put it in the box! Because of that today everything I mail in a Flat Rate envelope has a precut piece of 1/8 plywood as an anti fold protector.

Here on The HAMB, I've been generally lucky. I don't buy/sell/trade a lot here, but the little bit I have done, has generally been very good. I had one guy back out of a deal (sellers remorse?) & a couple folks still haven't come through on their Wall O' Pinstripes panels, & had 2xHAMB calendars lost in the mail (thanks Mr. Postman!) - everything else has worked out pretty well...

As for packing - I do a fair amount of buying on eBay & it appalls me what p***es for packaging material to some folks. When I was a kid, I worked in an avionics shop in their shipping/receiving dept - everything was packed for overkill, so I guess that's how I try to do most of my packing - it is amazing what happens to packages once they leave your care...

I am SERIOUSLY biting my tongue here.... we'll see if I last....

Last year I got 'burned' by TWO different 'Hambers'....

    #1(from Concord, CA) said,
yeah sure, I have a mid-30's truck bed for sale, $300....
I said, SOLD..!! so hey, since Paso is in a week or so,
can you drop it off on your way down..??
Most likely, no problem..!! we'll keep in touch... was the reply...
I kept trying to get a meeting time/place(no response for days...!!)
and at the very last minute he says, you know,
I think I'm going to keep it afterall... sorry...

    #2(from Tracy, CA) says,
yeah I have a '52(?) Desoto grill for sale, $200( I think it was..?)...
I said, SOLD..!! Hey since you're right by Pleasanton, and the
Goodguys show is this weekend, let's meet up there..?
Oh sorry, I'm not going this time around...
Oh, ok, I'll call you after I walk thru then,
and I'll be there within a half an hour...
Ok, cool, sounds good, see you then...
The next morning after I'm done walking the swap,(about 9:30am) I call...
Oh sorry, I just sold it to ANOTHER(!!!) Hamber just a while ago....

WHAT THE ****...???!!! these transactions weren't even FOR me..??!!!
they were for good friends of mine, who've been busting *** on their projects,
who were/ARE(!!!) looking for a few good parts,
who I'd been trying to tell about how 'neat and cool' the Hamb was..!!!!

    KARMA IS A *****....!!!!!

    flip side....

Mike Brimm(Kustombuilder) sent me a pair of door springs
for my Rivi FOR FREE..!!! the shipping cost was even on him....

Another Mike(earl schieb), sent me a headlight piece for 100% FREE as well..!!
I've had a few other transactions thru the Hamb cl***ifieds
that have gone off without a hitch.... Thank you very much guys...!!!

I've been burned on ebay a few times as well, yet I've also scored some
of the best deals EVER as well.... So no 'real' complaints there...

I think overall, MOST Hambers are 'good people'....
In fact I've met some of my best friends ever on here....
there are just a few ***holes and idiots thrown in to keep us on our toes....
    (I guess...???)

    AAArrrggghh...!!! Later... -Snacks....

  4. Actually it,s easy. Just put your ready packaged item in a second slightly larger box.

  5. I got some 34 pu parts sent here from Mild Mitch, FOR FREE!
I sent him a box of Belgian chocolates.
I got a sew-on patch sent here from Happy Poppy.
I still have to send him something, been over a year... [IMG] sorry dude.

I haven't bought or sold much here on the Hamb. But have had a few great guys here send me freebees. Their only repayment was to see as pic of it on the vehicle.
    Cool huh!
I realize there are alot of people here on the Hamb and I realize there's a bad apples in every bunch. It really suprises and disheartens me to find out that there are so many unhappy customers. I will still buy or sell here but please guys take time to properly package and be accurate and timely on your delivery.

Ya know, my delivery girl can't be responsible for every package. [IMG]

I've got a HAMBer that offered to trade cars with me for my 54 Chevy. He has been stringing me along for 2 months now. I even offered to load it onto my trailer and tow it 6 hours to his place to do the deal. He made up excuses but ***ured me he was still a go on the deal. Now, it's been another month and he's still flaking on me.

I sure wish he would just step up and say yes or no, because while I really want his car, I need mine gone soon, one way or another.

I've traded, bought, sold, gotten free parts and given away some things myself - everything has gone pretty smoothly. Simple truth is my my car would not exist as it does if not for this place.

There have been misunderstandings but no one has ever tried to straight up just rip me off and I hope no one thinks I've been less than honest. I think I pack stuff RIGHT - but my biggest problem is probably procrastination. If money is exchanged then I get stuff sent out ASAP. If it's a trade I tend to be lax - and I should work on that. Apologies to nosurf and Hotroddrummer (I think?) for taking so long.

I have had good luck with Hambers and on ebay so I'm just a lucky *******.

Maybe Ryan can setup a big brawl somewhere and all the people that have had problems can just get together and beat the hell outta each other and we can all watch.

    Just an idea.....

I will add that O´Brien Truckers shipping works great!
Got a box with "Customs of Sweden" plaques 2 days ago, nothing damaged.
I seldom send parts, and if I do I give them away. Hate to make money out of friends, maybe I´m stupid but that the way it is. But I send magazines a lot of times (Lead News) and I hope they do reach the readers undamaged. If not, I will always send a new copy.

i have bought, sold and traded with a lot of hambers. i have even sent parts to guys with the understanding they would pay when the parts came in. i have had great luck from hambers all over the world and have the up most trust in the hamb world. but i do have two hambers that have not paid on deals! but that's just the real world, some in every crowd!

  12. I gotta admit, a few times its taking me a few extra weeks to ship some stuff off, but since they built a new post office things will be easier..

Ill publicly announce that i havnt received my stuff from
    Flying Dutchman
    and Wolfman Nick..

No parts involved, just cool shirts...

I had a hard time sending a express letter to Europe but that was over a month ago, and i havnt gotten a word... Same goes for nick..

I know its a pain to wait on line to send ****, but come on 2 months to send a lousy pound box?

    Just my ****tn luck..

I ship things all the time here at work . The easiest way is to put the items in a garbage bag and get the air out as much as possible. Stick it in a box and put a can of expanding foam insulating stuff around it. Seal it up real fast before it starts coming out of the box.Several people have complained about how hard it is to get it cut out of the box but none ever complain about the condition.
On another note ,as a FNG I went for several months not realizing what the flashing envelope was for. I'm sure some people took that as me ignoring them ,I apologize.

Caveat emptor. Buyer beware...Seller too. I have done both here, nobody ever *****ed about what I sent them and anything I ever had a problem with was cleared up. There are two guys that owe me dough. I wouldn't drop a name unless it went too far.

I value my rep here on the board, this would be the last place I would ever not make a deal right. I too, have made friends here and my own personal honor forbids anything like that here.

Some folks do not understand the not so "light touch" the shippers like Fed Ex , UPS , USPS have. So...... they pack the item real poorly.

The item then arrives with the sides of the box blown out

Root, agreed, but only after all real efforts have been made to resolve the situation.

With my luck, I'd ***** publicly and then the guy would come back, "Sorry, been in cancer treatment...****head."

    Oh yeah, I almost forgot....
    A big thanks to Jerry(AZ) and ****..!!

Almost 2 yrs. ago I put up a post looking for a roof from a 47-53 Chevy p/u...
Jerry had one, said he was going to the Hot Rod Reunion in Bakersfield,
and asked me if I was going... I said I wasn't, so instead of meeting
him personally, he dropped it off at ****'s house...
**** held onto it for me until I made it out that way to pick it up,
and Jerry trusted me to send him the very reasonable amount of $$....
in fact, I sent it to him before I even picked the roof up,(sight unseen)
and when I did, it was in great shape..!!! Exactly what I needed...!!

plus, I ended up scoring a couple of parts from **** when I
finally made out to his house as well..!!!(it was a month or so I think...)

So yeah, another example of 'good people' on the ol' Hamb....
also, take into consideration I was very newly registered,
and there was less that 3000 of 'us' at the time....

    Thanks again guys..!!!! -Snacks....

My two cents: in response to Desertratrodder's post about rusty cars...keep in mind that if you're from California (or anywhere deemed a place where "clean, rust-free old cars" come from, that most people from states like Wisconsin on Eastward have a whole different mindset when it comes to what is repairable/worth fixing. In my experience, something to me that has "repairable" rust, might look like the car sat on a river bottom for several years to someone from a "dry" state...We use salt on our roads in Michigan in the winter, and you'd be hard pressed to find a car that was 5 or 6 years old (and a daily driver) that didn't have the beginnings of rot-thru someplace underneath.

Bottom line: get as much detail on a car before you make a purchase, get pictures of common-rust prone areas, and decide if your skills and money match the guys' description of the rust. "Minimal rust" around here means: "there's more rust on the car than I care to descibe" and it probably needs a floorpan somewhere. "Minimal rust" in Texas or California to me means the paint is wasted and bare spots on the hood and trunk have begun to surface rust.

And, for an extra cent: That small 1/2 inch rust bubble under the paint is probably hiding an area of rot and pinholes 3 times as big that will require sheetmetal surgery... but what do I know? [IMG]

I've bought 10-15 items here and no problem. However sent a moneyorder to someone from Texas for a piece of a '32 pickup door frame months ago and still waiting.i advertised some 305 SBC's here for cheap; got plenty of replies and be there soons,no one ever showed at 50 or 75 each. a few weeks ago I got *****ed out for junking some frames in the cl***ifieds, but had NO interest, only *****ers.I now buy here and have someone peddling on e-bay for me. Like most guys here I spend my money back on my projects from parts sales. A few bad apples leave a real bad taste.

A coupla years ago I shipped Ryan some wheels and tires in a deal and frankly, I was the king of procrastinators, but he was Very understanding and didn't get excited and kick my *** off the board! Other dealings have gone very well for me with several people. There is only one citizen on here, I won't say rodder cause he's never built a car, who had totally memory loss when it came time to pay back on some freebies but hey, now I now what to expect from him in the future. One outta 5 thou ain't bad!
No drama just happy to be building again and that is totally due to this board. Thanks Ryan and you too Grim!

dealin' on the HAMB can be both blessin' and curse. been burned a couple times for postage when shipped free parts, then have had Brewsir more than double the postage on some other free parts. one of the biggest problems is establishing condition of parts. what may be perfect or usable to you may be worse than the part I'm hoping to replace so then there are 2 additions to the s**** pile.

mostly its been incredible dealin' with guys on this board.freebies have come and have been sent many a time with no h***les, and mostly that's the way I clean out my garage. Once I had a guy in "La Florida" purchase at a swap meet a J2 tri-power manifold and ship it to me. He did the purchase and the mailing before I even knew the cost.

If someone burns you and you spot he's in the middle of a deal, it might be nice to warn the other side. that's been done for me a time or two.

I for one wouldn't want to be banished from the HAMB just over some lousy deal.

Hey if its free I guess you can't ***** to bad if it shows up in pieces. The funny thing is I see so much *****ing about the old guy has this car and wont get rid of it and its just rotting away, etc, etc. Well I think the same way about when things are neglected and arrive in pieces and are un repairable. Like cracked intakes and carbs and so forth. Hey those were vintage parts to and know are no good to anyone especially the buyer who spent his hard earned money on them and could have been hunting for quite a while to find them. Nuff Said.
