I'm building a four link for my T and I needed to know where do I find DOM Tubing in the houston area hopefully around Baytown I haven't called anywhere yet but I just figured it would be hard to find and besides that, I only know of two metal places Triple S on Monroe in Hobby and Metal Depots off I-10 in Mont Belvieu.
A lot of places don't sell partial sticks. And even if they do, the price per foot will make you crap one out. If you can't find one, maybe http://tubeservice.com/ would know.
Thanks INLAW A, I know exactly where that is I thought that fastenal only sold bolts. I appreciate It. Four link will hopefully be done tomorrow.
Try EMJ Metals. They have a sales office in Houston. I don't know if they have minimum order requirements, because they are a large industrial supplier, but it's a start. We used to get DOM from thier California location when I worked at Edelbrock. www.emjmetals.com Houston Location: 6201 Lumberdale Rd. Houston, Tx. (713)672-0528
OK,... I'm gonna ask this question since it came up in this post You listed DOM tubing... I asked several people familiar with pipe and they had no idea what DOM stood for. I saw it in the instructions at another site. All the construction people I also spoke with said all pipe was measured from the Inside measurement or ID. (or OD) Only think they could offer for DOM (and it was a guess) was Diameter- outside Measurement SO Maybe it's has something to do with what part of the country you live in,... but everything we have here is either ID or OD (inside diameter or outside diameter) Thats what made DOM so strange
Hey, I'm with ya I'd never heard of DOM until I read C9's tech on homemade hairpins. We always use ID or OD. But, I did read on here that it stood for Drawn Over Mandrel. But I'm not sure exactly what its all about
DOM stands for Drawn Over Mandrel as opposed to ERW which is Electric Resistance Welded. DOM tubing is higher quality, stronger, etc... see link. http://www.steeltubeinstitute.org/domprocesses.htm
Hi Guys, Dom Stand For Drawn Over Mandrel. It Is Very Common In The Metals Industry, But Not Everyone Knows What It Is Called.
Tubular Steel in Katy has anything you want in the way of tubing. Do not know if they have a minimum. (281) 371-5200 Ask if they will cut it and ship UPS to you. Cheaper that driving all the way to Katy. DOM stands for Drawn Over Mandrel, IE seamless tubing. When purchasing it, you spec the OD and wall thickness. Example, 7/8" OD x .188 wall, this gives and ID of about 1/2"
Tomorrow I'll give them a call but i won't have it shipped I don't live that far from katy only about 50 miles I guess
Steel Supply on Telephone Rd south of Hobby Airport carries it. Thats where I get mine. Triple S Steel although huge and carries just about everything does not carry DOM, or at least didn't prior to a year ago (Last time I was there). I'm going to have to check out Tubular Supply as they sound closer to me at this point.
I like to use http://www.onlinemetals.com They will cut it to length and deliver it to your door. I couldn't find any place local that would deal in the small quantities I needed. Maybe in Texas you'll have better luck.
Here's some discussion about DOM tubing from Eng-Tips forum: http://www.eng-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid=92368&page=9
I had lunch with one of my materials suppliers last week and we had quite a discussion about tubing standards and manufacturing proceedures. As noted in another post DOM is not really seamless. CDS (as implied, Cold Drawn Seamless) and Mil Spec 4130 chromoly are and are made by drawing bar stock over a mandrell. DOM and ERW (Electric Resistance Welded) are created from flat stock which is wrapped to form the tube. Again as implied by the name DOM is then drawn over a mandrel to get the final product. My guy also told me that there has been some experimentation with making 4130 out of flat stock. Evidently it is easier to maintain a constant wall thickness using this method. When bar stock is pierced and forced over a mandrell in can vary in wall thickness if it weaves a little in the process. Roo
I know this is an old bump, but just wanted to say I got a whole mess of DOM from EMJ and it was very little hassle, shipped (no charge) right to the shop and better prices than the others I shopped at.
