The earlier box has a bigger flange. The later has a smaller one. Either one you use, youll probably end up cutting it to fit in your A frame. I had to cut the **** outta mine.
My suggestion would be for you to read this thread about Vega steering boxes: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=277304 Dave http://www.roadsters.com/
Not sure if this would be something you'd care to consider, but I used a stock Model A Gemmer Box in my AV8. The later 2-tooth boxes are adjustable and are easily modified to clear the engine by shortening the sector housing like they do with the F-1 box. Here's a link to the thread: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=199148&highlight=gemmer+steering With a shortened pitman arm and skinny tires, it's almost like power steering
I have the same A box, my concern with that is what to use for a pitman? I want to use trad 11/16 tie rod ends on my link to spindle arm.
The stock Model A drag link is pretty traditional You can convert the steering arm end to 11/16" tie rod if you want, but I just added one of the tie rod balls available from any of the resto guys (Mac's #B3311) to the steering arm and used the complete stock Model A drag link. Whatever you end up using for a steering box, good chance, you'll have to graft on a splined shaft for the steering wheel.
You can buy those balls like the one you illustrated? When you 'shortened' the pitman, how did you affix the new ball?
Yup, Mac's has the ball ends for about $5 (part number B3311) I bought the arm from Mike’s Affordable in Georgia. Brand new 1” shortened arms with ball are $70 exchange.
