Looking for a GOOD driveway alarm...

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by lango, Aug 23, 2008.

  1. Do any of you guys have a good dependable driveway alert in use? I tried one I got from mailorder (Northern) and it only lasted a little over a year. I'm lookin for more bang for my buck. FYI- it'll need to be about 150-200' from the house.
Lookin online I find plenty to choose from, from the airhose activated type to infrared and on and on.
I'd appreciate any advice on this. Thanks.

I just saw the rubber-hose-ding-ding ones somewhere on line, they still make 'em.

It's funny you bring this up, 5 minutes ago my dad called to ask me to get him a cheapo one from Harbor Freight when I go there today.

I have a pet raccoon that lives in the tree in front. He's real mean.

From time to time I've wanted to bring home one of the Bin Laden barriers from work. Seen one of them pop up and split a car during a test.....might be excessive but I do hate the paperboy.

  9. Those Milton driveway signals are on Evil bay all the time... I think I've got one, but I'd have to hunt for it.

  10. Thanks, folks. I had no idea the Milton bells were still around.(They don't need 'em at the Quick Trip.)
    That's what I'll get.

I rigged a 120 decibel siren (really, really loud) up to a standard motion detected dual bulb outdoor light. It's been up for a couple of years now, out in all of the elements here (heat, snow, etc.) and just keeps on working. Not only do I know when someone's coming but it lights up their ass as well! Scares the crap out of some of them. I placed the siren about 75' from the motion detector, hanging on the barn, aimed at the house. The only critical part was having the 12v adapter out of the weather. The best part is that once you've set the sensitivity and time to your liking the siren stays on as long as the lights do.

Of course, you have to have power at the detector source.

Got the siren & a 12 volt adapter at Radio Shack. They no longer show it but they do have a 115dB water-resistant car alarm for $20. Might be worth a look.

Here's our alarms. They can be sleeping on the couch but somehow know whenever anyone is in our driveway.;)

We actually have one of these at the service station i work at, an original from years ago still in active duty...
Yes, 3 bay old fashioned full serve Sunoco....NO DAMN MINI MART!
They work very good..200 ft is a lot of bell hose to run though :)

Honestly, if you went this route, how would you run the hose without damaging it from time to time? Underground until it's at the end of the driveway or something then cross it over?
After close to 20 years, i've developed a hatred for that damn bell!

    I have 2
One is battery opperated, the other is Dog food fueled.
the battery opperated one has a motion and heat sensitive eye in it. Think i bought it at Home Depot..works great. (do need to adjust the sensitivity, it will pick up small animals and set it off)
the Dog, he hears everything, and will either run over to the window see what it is and bark, or come and get me if he sees someone out front.
