    Considering pulling y block from ol eddie the edsel and replacing with SB ford, if I can not locate a good replacement, but would like to keep the Mile-o-matic, anyone know of a adapter for bell housing? or any known problems with swap.

  4. Why would you want to keep the "mile-o-matic" ... ??? Most likely the sbf would have an overdrive ... ???

    I totally agree. Heck, I'd personally keep the Y-block and trash the trans. I have a 4spd toploader behind the 312 in my "A" PU, and an FMX behind the 292 in my '57 wagon. If I was to do the wagon again, I'd have bought an adapter and used a C-4.

    But, if you're set on a SBF, just use the C-4, C-6 or whatever comes with it. If you ever have to rebuild the old slushbox you'll wish you had changed.

    I don't know for sure, but I'd guess that you'd have to change drive shafts, modify the trans mount, as well as your shifter linkage. And of course you'll need to get an adapater. Flat-o-matic makes a good kit.

    If you go this route you can run a RM-8056 " Ford "Y" Block to Ford toploader, BW-T10 " Here are the spec's on it:

    Ford "Y" Block to Ford toploader, BW-T10

    Height = 6.300
    Trans. Bore Ø = Universal 4.910/4.685/4.850
    Engine = Ford "Y" Block
    Trans. = Ford "Y" Block
    Clutch Ø = 11"
    Flywheel = 164 tooth
    Weight = 21#
    Has p***ed SFI testing
    Pivot ball, fork brackets, full engine plate, and grade 8 bolts included
    You will need to use our flywheel. Steel billet 164 tooth with Y block bolt pattern. Flywheels are double drilled for 10.4 metric pattern as well as 11" Ford
    Starter is a Powermaster 9506

    Just a thought good luck!

  10. Y block ford and oldsmobile engine owners are kinda wierd they have convinced themselves that they have good well designed mills . In fact they are slower than other comparable engines. Put in the small block along with a c4 or c6 and keep the old boat anchor so you can include it if you ever want to sell. Also a FE ford would work well in your application.:cool: OldWolf

    ??????? I don't think you get the point of owning a Y-block or Olds. If it was only about going fast, 75% of the engines in cars on the HAMB would not be used. I'll bet my left nut that my 312 gets 10 times more looks than any small block plus it can at least keep up with them.

    So what are you driving?

  14. Yea those 312,s go clackitty clack . Swapping in a later small block or FE will give more dependability power and fuel milage. A few years ago a guy came by wanting a good 292. I stated that they never made one. He has a 62 f600 we installed a 76 360 FE in it. Ha absoultly loves the bigger mill has more power and gets almost double the fuel milage and he now has electronic ignition and a alternator. We mostly drive chev pickups from 64 to 72 I also have two 55 two door wagons. My ford wagon has a 262 six from a truck and a 3 speed over drive. My chev wagon has a 327 with 57 heads two four corvette intake with carter afbs a 4 speed and a ford 9 inch rearend. We have four 292,s that we would sell cheap.:cool:OldfWolf

    Everything is a trade off. I could sell my 312 Model A and buy a new Mustang that has way more power, much better fuel economy, and all the electric goo gaws. It would be fun....until I parked it next to all the other new Mustangs just like it. I think I'll stick to my noisey, gas ****ing, dual pointed, generator equipt, obsolete 312 that has always started and never left me stranded in the over 4 years it's been on the road.

    That old Y has some life left in it, and it can be dressed up quite nicely, but the main reason to keep that old Y is for the MILE-O-MATIC. That and Furdomatic, and the irrepressible Merc-o-matic are the catchiest names for transmissions. If the MILE-O-MATIC has the push****on gears it is one, crazy trans.

    I have a 55 Ford Fairlane with a 272 and Ford O Matic . When I bought it I thought about a 351W and building it to 400+ HP . Well the 351W is still in the garage after 2 years . I am building a 292 Y BLOCK , .040 with Silv O Lite pistons , "G" heads , Offy 3x2 with Holley 94's , Isky 3/4 race cam , tube headers , 3 on the floor and 4:10 rear !!! ALL OLD SCHOOL parts ! I can smoke the tires to death and run with the best on the street . The Y block ruled the NASCAR and drag track in the mid 50's ! All you guys wanting to know why a Y Block , then pick up a few books and read . Go look at John Mummerts or some of his friends and you ask the WHY a Y block . That is a powerfull engine ! They had blowers and super chargers and all the goodies that you could spend your money on . You can even get some big cube Stroker kits for them too . Well I will keep my Y Block and it will out last your engine any day of the week !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  21. And in 1957 Chevy's most powerful engine was a 282 hp with a Rochester Fuel Injection that was nothing but problems. Ford had a 300 hp supercharged engine and it's 2-4bbl version was 270 hp same as Chevy's 2-4 version. And believe it or not ... Ford outsold Chevy in 1957. Who'd think it now with sooooo many '57 Chevy's around vs 57 Fords? And in '56 Chevy's most powerful engine was 225 hp 2-4 barrel version. So the old Y-blocks had a ton of power and back in those days would take more punishment than any SBC, and I was a Chevy guy back then and I think I put about 14 or 15 engines in my '55 .... I blew up everything there was to blow up on a 265 Chevy .... Ahhhh, for the days .... lol !!:rolleyes:
