I'm thinking about putting a 283 in my 38. Are there any block hugger headers that will clear the streering box or should I use a p***enger side truck rams horn that takes the exhaust forward and then back around. Whats the best way to do this???

I had a 37 coupe with a GM 525 box. I used the CE offset motor mounts and Sanderson headers that bring the exhaust forward and it worked great. You can use that truck manifold as well and save some cash.

  3. i have found that block huggers don not work very well on `35-`40 fords with a sbc.

Sanderson makes a header for that application , the driver side header angles froward to clear the steering box. their part number is CC4

here it is from their website: http://www.sandersonheaders.com/product_info.php?products_id=63

rams horns work fine if you get creative with the drivers side headpipe

  4. Try one of the "make your own headers kits" or if you want to save some money pull some old junk headers out of the s**** pile, cut them up and make your own. With some planing it's not that hard.

Had a similar problem, where conventional block huggers wouldn't clear the box. Found these at a swap meet (seller said they were for a sbc/jeep conversion ?) and took a saw to them.

You might try headers for a Chevy in a Jeep. The exhaust pipes go up and over then down at the rear corner of the head. I can't remember who made them, but a call to Summit probably would get you the number. Seems like they were between $300-400 for the chrome ones.

Also look into using headers meant for the 94-96 Impala SS or caprice with same engine. D-port, but they might fit and individual pipes go up instead of down until at the rear of the engine. These are pretty expensive though.

Many years ago, when rodders first started installing 265 and 283 Chevrolet engines in the early Fords ( 35 to 40 ) ... they used a Wilcap adapter for the engine/transmission and a set of 55 to 57 Chevrolet exhaust manifolds. I had a set on my 40 with a 283. The left side and the right side are the same except for the generator mount. I used a set of the right side ones on both side of my 283. I had a Alan Grove alternator mount.

I would not suggest using these 265/283 manifolds on a 327 or a 350 ... because I think they might be restrictive on a larger engine ... but IMHO ... they are great on a 283 :D

Thanks for the info guys. Here is the 283 I just picked up for it. Gonna keep it stock inside and out. Hopefully the firewall won't have to be modified to fit it in.

Heres a link to a tech thread on how I did mine.

If you are going to use a Hurst type saddle mount, you will need to use a Mallory or simuliar type dizzy. The later points type GM is a tad to big and the fire wall will need to be altered just a bit.

I have since changed over to fenderwell headers and I still have those pipes if you are interested.

I do not know about a 38 Ford, but on my 40 standard ... the old small 57 distributor with the oil tube on the side cleared the firewall ( barely ). I finally wore out the old 57 distributor and sold it to a number matching 57 Chevrolet type guy and bought the small body MSD distributor with HEI built in. Much better starts and about 2 MPG better fuel mileage was the benefit :)
