Have you tried to contact Alan Hess? Hes the author of "Googie: 50's coffee shop architecture" That might be a good source..

also Maybe the Los Angeles Conservancy is another good place to look.

Count me in on opening day also!!

Alan Hess has been a great help, he was @ our Ghost cruise in Feb 07, Unfortunately he doesn't have any images of the build other than the one that Adriene Biondo/Minnie Ortner supplied him when he put it on the cover of Googie Redux. That book has been invaluable in getting our point across to the all that would listen.

Adriene is the chair of the Mod-Com unit of the LA Conservancy so I have exhausted my resources for the images sought. They are for the rebuild so that we can make her just like she was on openning day April 17,1958,

The images posted are from the Architect and Bob's owner JIm Louder,
we used what we thought were the clolors. Fortunately, the original terrazo survives on the floor and we can actually match and build off it so when one comes to call on it they'll get that same ol Harvey's feeling again.

We are doing the best we can to make this happen. It is a very difficult process. This place will be the Real Deal when it opens. unlike any other New Generation Bob's. The Broiler will be well represented and I hope that
you all will come and enjoy it much like I did when I old enough to appreciate it.

Now we just gotta get thru all of the plan cks and get the lumber up so we can see some action. The city totally kept their promise from that Crowded City Council Meeting Jan 9,2007 and even have put $900k towards its rebuild. That is a hell of a head start so it will be done just as it was, save for part of the west side car canopy that will not put back on due to new city restrictions pertaining to the drive thru.

Jim says if we pack it, he could seek a variance and rebuild what was left off. So when it opens lets continue to pack the joint.
    Thanx for the input

    Ok Alex,
    I'll let Jim know.
Thanx I know he'll dig it! You know that this place was like no other.
The kind of cars that came here were unique. Looking foward to seeing that again.

    Kevin,

I've only read snippits of this thread from time to time. I need to go back and read the whole thing when I have a couple of spare hours. You have done an amazing job on this project. I hope you have do***ented everything so you can write a book on the rebuild. I'd buy it.

It's all mostly here on the HAMB. It has been a long road, kinda bummed @ times but way happy as well! I met some very niice people who do this type of building saving all of the time and even have received a slight education.
I did this for us car guys/gals who want to give a slice of good ol apple pie to their children/grandchildren. We'll write a book about it and hopefully there will be a market for it.
Thank you for your good thoughts.

As much as this has, no doubt, been difficult and frustrating I think it's great to have something you're p***ionate about. The feeling of accomplishment when it's done will be unreal and also that education you talk about...it'll be amazing to look back and see how much you learnt and how many different people you know that you would not have otherwise met.

    Looking forward to the book!

What is happening with Mearle's in Visalia on Mooney Bl?. I heard one of the family members actually won the auction,What's going on with it now? Can someone in that area give me a heads up.
Go to post #113 for a picture Can't find anything on it online, Perhaps a midstate HAMBer could shed some light on the subject?

I would buy the book and it's really cool when a wrong is righted...when it's done I will haul *** up there with my kids...I have been dying for a Big Boy Burger and a Silver Goblet milkshake...they were called Azars in Northern Indiana where I am from...there used to be a field out by New Haven, Indiana when I was a kid where the were dozens of new Big Boy statues...boy was that an opportunity missed for a young juvenile delinquent like myself...keep up the good work guys

That's they car hop cruise we did @ Bob's Toluca Lake last saturday night in order to show Jim that there is a waiting/wanting crowd for it. He was happy with the turnout and I was exstatic when the 50+ Vintage bikes showed up.! It was like wave after wave!, alot of business was done that night!.

    Great news,
Were you able to have it declared a landmark? wouldn't that make it exempt from the new codes? Since you are rebuilding it exactly as it was??

What about Charles Phoenix? Im sure he has some pictures too..

Im sure most engineers in todays sue-happy society would totally over design the carport with 3x as much steel as you would actually need!
Hopefully it will still "float" when its rebuilt.

It can happen every week on a Saturday if people want to come and eat in their car @ Toluca Lake, They have it set up for Car Hop service from 5-10 pm Sat/Sun. Do you guys want to do this until the Broiler opens?
I'm in if ya just let me know.

Do you think that you'd might want to meet @ the Nordic Fox in Downey on Aug 30,for a last cruise there? It's close to Whittier.;)
