i'm rstoreing a 49 chevy truck. basically the truck is original and wanna keep the stock look. it's a three on the tree with a 62 235. planning on lowering about 6in, keeping the 3 on the tree, and installing a 67 283. I have a saginaw 3 speed which was part of the 235. i will be purchasing a 3 speed trans from a 292 for the (bellhousing, new clutch and pressure plate) for the 283. the 235 thats in now is a blue flame w 150 h.p. the 283 is 195 h.p. i'm not looking to blow away a viper, but just want a nice cruiser. possibly in the future i would like to pull tear drop camper too. now the question. will the saginaw trans and stock year hold the extra horsepower of the 283 and be alright for light towing? or should i put the 292 trans in ( or find a 3 speed trans that was on a v-8) and change rears. WANNA KEEP 6 LUG PATTERN AND DRUMS ON ALL 4'S <!-- / message -->
The trans and rear were built for truck duty. You should have no trouble with a light trailer. Don't expect much ibn the way of top peed out of the set up, probably around 55-60. jerry
got some pics of the ol truck. got from a farmer. last time it was inspected was 1993. sat in a field since until 1 1/2 ago. now trying to reserect.
Ya got a nice lookin' 5 window there .The sag. ****** and the stock rear end were made for truck use, as Jerry pointed out. As he said your top end ain't gonna be real much, but you'll have more than enough torque to get the job done. Be sure and show us the "after" pics....
thanks y'all for the info. like i said , not looking to break a land speed record. just want a nice cruiser. right now the hole front clip is getting ready to pull the ol 6 out and put the 283 in. try to get some pics post with new engine.
