I almost totaled my 51 Chevy today because some ***hat brazed together a br*** and steel fitting. I checked the brakes on this car when I got it, but I guess I figured fittings should be good. The main brake line blew right off the master.

WTF!? Some of the **** people come up with is beyond imagination. That's damn scarey. Glad you weren't hurt.

Completely ****ing insane. Did I sugar coat it to much? Glad to hear that you and your ride is safe. You better get it on the lift and go over EVERYTHING on your ride. A crazy ******* like that might have done something else equally dangerous.

Truer words can't be spoken.. I have friend's who ARE car guy's, but don't have the experience in area's like brake's..I think NOTHING of it when they ask for help to learn, or for me to do it..
There's no reason to 'try' thing's that may hurt or kill someone.

Glad your ok..man that really IS scary!

Hmmm... that could have worked if they put some tape on it, or maybe a tape and glue mixture.:D

Looks alot like the didn't use any flux on that fitting, not that it's right to braze brake fittings. I do alot of brazing and silver soldering at work. Looks like thy painted it to disguise their "quality" work.

I did a braze job on 1 1/2 inch compressor line for a friend and it's still going strong. Nowhere near the pressure but more vibration.

If it were me I'd replace every fitting on that car, just for the peace of mind that it's my life on the line!

  11. I guess the dumb *** that did this qualifies for the Nickname Award from that thread. I said in that thread if I couldn't decide I'd just call em a retard or a num-nuts. Well this *** hat qualifies for the name "Retarded-****ing-Num-Nuts". I rest my case!!! Just glad no one was injured>>>>.

S-C-A-R-E-Y! That is just a total **** job. Not that hard to just get the right fittings that actually fit togther properly. Probably more work to solder it ( I agree, looks like solder ) like they did than get the right fittings. It is a bad sign overall when the half *** work was obviously more effort than proper work would have been. Cutting corners on brakes is not the place to do it.

As mentioned, I would replace pretty much all the brake lines at this point and look real close for other **** while you're under there.

Damn scary stuff! I have been reworking a car for a buddy of mine...he bought it off the internet...so far I found a hard front brake line that started leaking from a crack when I removed it from the rubber line, one front airbag that was rubbing the spring pocket and was ready to blow, tons of bad welds and a whole list of other ****....all I can say is that if I were you I would go over the rest of th car with a fin tooth comb and figure out what else he cheated on!!!

well I have had the car for 3 years. So at least that long. The guy i had it from had it a long time and he said the brakes were one of the first things he did. So maybe 5-10 years.

I should have checked it better when I got it, this is the same car that had zipties instead of hose clamps holding together fuel lines that werent even flared. And it had the exhaust touching the plastic gas tank. It almost melted a hole in the tank.

I need to look into this further and see if there is a problem with the master. I should have still had some brakes since its a dual master. Or maybe it was never bled properly...

If you look at things like block fittings on the end of brake hoses, they're furnace brazed or soldered. So it's not brazing itself that's the problem. More like poor prep and improper fit of the contact surfaces. Great to hear nothing terrible happened, and you make a good point about the dual MC investigation. good luck

If it was a dual master cylinder, yes, you should have had brakes on two wheels. Take a good look at what that previous owner did. I hope he plumbed two separate brake line systems.

All this h***le for a 79 cent part! Check to make sure your pedal has enough throw to actually engage the dual master cylinder. That's the problem I've run into the most when upgrading single setups.

  24. Not trying to be a **** or anything but damn, if you see some cobbled up **** like that don't ignore it and think it is ok. When dealing with critical components such as brakes/steering safety has to come first. Glad to hear no one got hurt, but remember you are not the only person on the road here. Good luck in getting it fixed.

Just to stir the ant hill with a stick and see what happens...

I would have no problem driving a car where i connected two parts in the brake system by br*** soldering.

We deal with specialized custom cars built out of combinations of parts no one at any factory ever meant would go together. There are no true bolt together solutions in what we do.

Sure steering and braking issues are more important than others since if you get it wrong, you die.

In a brake system there are a number of things where you need to be sure that you know what you are doing, if not, stay out.

I rather drive a car with a properly made brazed joint somewhere than a car with f--d up brake balance

uh... there is no such thing as a "properly made brazed joint" in a brake system

    Why not?

Why is a brazed joint a bigger issue than single flared brake lines, mechanical linkages made by people without any welding skills or knowledge och mechanical engineering, misguided use of residual valves etc?

That fitting was cobbled together because someone decided he either didn't want to spend the time and or money to go get the correct fittings. A shortcut that could have cost a life or lives at any time in the past 10 or 15 years.

One of my former students beautiful 74 Cougar burned to the ground in back of the school shop a few years ago because his father had decided that they didn't need to replace the power steering pressure hose and cut it in two and put a pipe ****** in the middle held on with twisted bailing wire for clamps. It took my friend with the fire department about one minute to find the cause of the fire after it was put out.

I'm with the group who say go over the whole car with a fine tooth comb and check for other things that may not be right.

i used compression fittings on my brakes all the time too:eek:

not really, but working at a parts store shows you how many stupid people do, and other people that want to buy hose to repair the break in the fuel line and some clamps!
