Folks Of Interest OT Ralph Lauren's car Collection...

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Bad Bob, Aug 26, 2008.

  1. I know it's not all you guys cup of tea,but I just got done watching a show on Ralph Laurens cars. 550 Porsche Spider,Blower Bentley,Mercedes Gulwing,58 Ferrari Testarosa,250 GTB,Alfa Romeo Milla Millia,McClaren F1 LM,
Bugatti, and a few more. I've seen other threads about the love for vintage sports cars and racecars,so I know some of you guys will appreciate the show. I couldn't record it because I don't have a TIVO on my HDTV. Oh well. If you do,it's on HD Theatre at 12 mid. PT.
After he takes his cars to Pebble Beach for judging,he drives his cars. Wait til you see him driving his new McClaren!! (wearing ear-muffs,HA HA). It says "He doesn't have alot of cars, just the best!". And,they don't just sit in some Museum.
Makes you wonder what your poison would be ,if money was NO OBJECT!!!

  2. Hey Bob, Did you miss the show at the Friends Church last Sat.? A good turnout with a Buggati Veyron, Enzo, F-430, MBZ McClaren, authentic Cobra just to name a few. I'll post some pics'.

Bob, that sounds like the same show I saw a few months ago, really well done with some great background settings. I think it was a preview progran that sadly didn't get picked up. Think how great that could have been if other collections were given the same treatment. The restoration coverage of the Alfa Romeo 2900 was really well done and and the time involved was based on reality, not a TV show time frame. Sure would be nice to have a tape of the show.

He has a series of garages and his cars are color coded to each garage. Red cars in one garage, silver cars in another and so on. Rather than grouping brands, he groups by color.

In 2003 I was at the Porsche factory picking up a car and as part of the day you get a guided tour of the factory.

There is an area that all the cars are held in after they come off of the production line and have their 30 mile road test.

Amongst the cars there was a new 996 Turbo, the reason I noticed it was unlike all the other silver Porsches. It was Dogs Knob red, with a red interior and red stitching. And it did not look bitchin... it looked shit with a capital S....

According to the guy giving us the tour it was a special order for Ralph Lauren....

Wonder if he has a garage for Dogs Knob Red cars.....

    Guys,
We've restored a lot of the cars in his collection, and won Best of Show
at Pebble Beach in 1990 with the Bugatti Atlantique, and again in '93 with
the Count Trossi Mercedes Benz SSK. Both spectacular cars, and I'm looking at them as I write this. He keeps about eight to ten cars here almost
permanently. We ship them to him as he needs them. He's actually a very nice
guy, and really loves the cars. Everyone of them is registered and insured.
[Wouldn't you love to be THAT insurance agent.] Anyway, they all get driven. Most of the rumors about him, and the cars are bullshit, and I can
assure you that the Red Porsche with the Red interior was not his.
    The man has great taste.

If remember correctly, wasnt the Polo guy involved with getting the "old crow" tanker in some commercials and photoshoots?

Wow, amazing cars at every level.

The color organization is a cool idea even if he doesn't do it. Will remember that when my lotto fortune is handed out. Maybe paint each building to match, just because.

Alfin, Years ago I worked on the sister car to the Atlantique Coupe, now in a New Hampshire collection and fellow Pebble Beach winner. Have the two cars ever shown side by side? The Trossi Mercedes SSK is one beautiful roadster!

What? You've never heard of the Ambiguously Gay Duo?

It was an SNL cartoon a few years back. I think you can find it on You Tube.

I believe those "ear muffs" in the McLaren F1 is a functional radio to talk with other passengers if present (like in a helicopter) as well as provide protections since the engine is RIGHT behind you.

The Old Crow deal was Tommy Hilfiger. The cars and chick looked great!
The "driver" dweeb was totally gay.

Most people that see those ads don't have a clue - hope the car owners got a nice payday!

Hilfiger's & Lauren's love of classic cars prolly says something about rules about color & form being consistent across many mediums

    I totally agree.

  25. Like I said earlier. His cars are some of the most beautiful ever built, but not what I would buy,if money was no object. Except maybe the McClaren F1. Try to imagine the collection you could have of the cars that YOU like! WOW! I,for one, would have a stable of Mercs, and one 33-34 Coupe like Robert Lomas's. Fuck,I could just buy his,lol...
Seriously though. Regardless wether his cars are to your taste or not,I have LOTS of respect for a guy who loves cars and knows that they should be driven, not just polished and stared at.
I was impressed that the Alfa wasn't ready for the show and had no motor in it. That just lends to the TRUTH to what really happens in shops sometimes. What I would give to take that for a spin!!!!! Sorry...dreaming again,ha ha ha!

That was one of the highlights of that show IMO, reality! I believe the car did win Best of Show at Pebble Beach the following year.

  28. Yea,they showed that at the end of the show. What a beautiful car! I wish they would have talked about the Dino he had. My favorite Ferrari!
One of these days I'll go to Pebble Beach and walk around on my tongue...

It won First in Class, not Best of Show.
When it was shown at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston it had no engine
in it. We weighted the chassis down with sand bags to get the ride height
right. It was an incredible push to get it finished for Pebble because it was
at the museum till mid July. It is an awesome car, fast as hell, and probably
the McLaren F1 of it's day.
