I am moving the radiator forward about 8" to give my truck a longer nose. Can I leave the fan where it is, or should I find a way to move it forward too?

  2. Leaving it where it is will stop any cooling efficiency you have. Get a space and you will be fine. That or remove the mechanical fan and replace with an electrical fan if it isn't an open engine bay.

Do you mean get a "spacer"?

Moving 8" will not be possible with a spacer. The choice will be between eliminating the mechanicla fan and installing an electric fan mounted on the rear of the radiator core as a puller of air through the core...OR going to a fan clutch style fan and making up a shroud covering the radiator core and surrounding the fan.

An electric fan is an option since it is a closed hood. It is on my 1944 GMC 2 1/2 ton truck so it isn't terribly correct for a war time vehicle.

How far can a spacer be used?

There is a partial shroud on there now. If I made a box spacer and moved the shroud closer to the fan, would that work?

Could I use a combination of the two methods?

  8. Sorry, 8 inches? Thats too far for a spacer! Either the shroud or the electric fan are your choices unless you can extend the front without moving the radiator?
I cant see extending the shroud as an issue so long as its done right.

The truck has an exposed radiator so I can't make up the difference forward of the radiator.
