Anyone running a plastic race-style seat from Jeg's or Summit on the street

I've been looking into getting bucket or at least single type seats, and getting rid of my bench. I want to eventually put the parking/emergency brake in between the seats. Everything is so expensive, but those Kirkey (??) seats from Jeg's are dirt cheap. Can they be used as bomber type replacements? I don't know anything about them so please set me straight. Usually if something seems to good to be true it is.

Yep. I replaced my disgusting bench with plastic Buckets in my off topic car years ago- no problems to date. I only have a couple suggestions-

1- get a skinny wallet. it's not unlike sitting on a slightly padded park bench with your "Costanza wad" in the hip pocket. on my last trip to San Antonio in the car, I noticed about 30 miles outside oftown I was slowing down. then I realized it was because my leg was asleep, and I was no longer pushing on the "go" pedal.:D

#2- buy cheap seats, but good covers- the cheesy vinyl ones last for around 6 months before they begin to go to shit. I installed Jaz Racing covers on my "El Cheapo" buckets, and not only do they look a million times better, they actually have some ass padding in 'em!

#3- a little lean back goes a long way towards comfort. they are designed to "cup the buttocks" so there is less pressure on the backs of your thighs. ( I would imagine it has something to do with actual racing) it helps to have a couple degrees of lean in them, so you can ride in them for long periods of time.

#4- the silly slider kit is well worth the extra 50 bucks-and yes, you want them on BOTH seats. they no longer flip forward, so putting anything bigger than your lunchbox in the back becomes a sumbitch unless you can scoot them forward a few inches. the beauty of this is your wifes bohemoth friend can no longer fit in the back...problem is, if your wife really wants her to go, she's ridin' shotgun.
now may be a good time to go ahead and remove the rear seats completely for "additional weight savings"- and a rollcage will further discourage "El Porko" from getting in at all. and if she's reeeal persistant...well, it's good for a laugh.:D

I had them in a 64 falcon pro street. I had falcon sliders on them and they worked well.

I'm now the proud owner of 2 Jeg's Highback Race Seats. They have 6 bolt holes on the bottom.

If you own some of these: How many of the holes should I use to mount them? What size bolts do they take?

I had some JAZZ low back buckets, and really liked them. Alot nicer than my friends Jegs brand seats and the low back style looks cooler to me, although no neck protection unless you mount some sort of padded head rest on the roll bar.

Just another note... I bought the mounts they sell (the basic angle sheet metal looking ones). They sucked so I took a set of old bucket seat leg/slider things and removed the sliding part and that left me with just the stationary mount part with legs. I drilled holes in the to mount the seats to them and they worked great and looked way cooler than angle iron. I used about 3 bolts per side, so 6 bolts per seat. I forget what size they are.

  10. I'd use some 60s van seats; look better and more comfortable.

SCTA made us take out plastic seats and replace them with metal ones this year. If anybody wants one or two of the low back fiberglass seats, come and get them. Free in San Mateo. U-Haul.

these seats are the most dangerous parts ever made .i see them in drag cars but would never use them in a race car or let my kids ride in them .play safe

  13. I have them in my 57 and they fit my ass just nicely!!! I have them mounted on Fiero bucket seat sliders narrowed in a bit.

In a crash, plastic seats can break and the sharp edges can stab you.

    Your call.

You've got a NASCAR/USAC/NHRA/SCTA/SCCA/FIA rule book in hand while you build that street car don't you?

If it was burning and melting he was held in the seat by something other than semi-liquid plastic. Bummer way to go....:(

I don't want to upset anyone or start a fight, but this quote says it all. Guys put blown big blocks into a car that is damn near 100 years old, and I need to worry about a seat engineered and produced (for racing purposes) last week?

Sometimes when I read these threads I'm reminded of the Simpsons, like when the baby carriage, kids wagon, wheelchair etc. tip over and it bursts into flames. ;)

One is gone. Looks like the Jazz seat pictured above. one is left. Fiberglass. Free with cover.

  26. I had one of those plastic seats in my OT 2000 Z/28, way more comfy than the Kirkeys in my OT 1998 Formula:

My Kirkey's are not that comfortable:

  27. They are also ugly and modern looking; don't belong in a traditional hot rod.

Even though you state this as fact, I'm pretty sure it's just an opinion.
