the reason I'm wondering if i should ask this question is cause i saw a guy ask a similar question and it seem like he got reamed but hell with it im asking. alright i have a 29 ford frame i would like to make a rolling chassis i have the I beam front with split wishbones and believe me ive been trying to find out what to do.i wanna ask as much as i can cause this is my first ride ill have ever built front frame up and i wanna do it with the best knowledge so my question is if i was to mount the wishbones to the frame the mounts for the shackles and spring wont like up strait what do i do i asked a guy at a suspension shop he said prolly heat em and bend em but id rather ask YOU GUYS cause i feel theres a better answer or maybe hes right? if anyone wants pics private message me with your email and ill get em to ya thanks T
Buy Vern Tardel's book. It'll answer pretty much any question you'll ever have about building a Model A. http://www.verntardel.com/collections/books/products/how-to-build-a-traditional-ford-hot-rod
Sounds like you have a later axle / spring set up with spring in front of axle. Let's establish the facts first, then we'll talk about solutions to your problem. Am I right about the axle? Do you want to run the spring over the axle as per model A? Why are you splitting the bones? Any othe info or pics of what you have and what you want to do will help. I don't think you need a reaming for asking questions, but you do need to learn how punctuate and structure a sentence. Oh yeah...what The Brudwich said is sound advice. Pete
Just open up and send us pic's and we will have a better idea where you are at with things. There is always going to be somebody just flipping thru the threads who has to dump on some vulnerable new guy. dont worry about it as there are plenty of good folks who dont mind helping somebody who is trying to help them self. Setting up radius rods too soon maybe a mistake as you need to accommodate your engine weight etc, so positioning and bending too early may mean that you end up needing change it again later. I have moto in hot rod building that you end up doing most things twice before you end up happy with it, especially on a 1st build. I await you additional information so we can proceed.
im not sure what year the axle is and i dont have the spring for the front of the axle but from pics and reading it looks as if it mounts in front im not sure how i wanna run the spring i just want it to work right ya know and i didnt split the wish bones the guy i got it from had already done so im just trying to figure it out and yes that book that brudwich is talkin about looks to be good and sorry about the punctuation and sentence structure didnt know that it would really bother anyone besides were just chattin about cars onl here not takin english LOL thanks for the feedback
fiftyv8 should i just put the pics in my album on here or would you like them emailed to you which ever is fine with me also i dont have a engine for her right yet i could got a flathead v8 which wouldve been great but i couldnt afford the extra cash at the moment but the whole car is in parts my wife has already started cleanin on the body but i feel i need to get the chassis together and rolling before i start patchin panels thats for the input hit me back
Put the pics on here. May as well get a few more eyes looking at what you have and what you're trying to do.
Welcome to the HAMB, posting photos is the best way of letting us all understand from the getgo what the problem is that you want help with.
To put pics on here, when you write your post, scroll down and you'll see a box that says "manage attachments". Click on it and it will allow you to browse your folders and attach the pics to your post. Just make sure you take note of the max file size. You might have to shrink your pics first. Unless of course you have your pics on Photobucket. That's different altogether. And it's not an English lesson, but I for one am going to get pretty pissed off pretty quick if I have to keep reading your posts twice to make sense of them. Pete
Bending the spring perches is not that difficult. With the help of the wife I bent mine close. Then with the help of some local friends we fine tuned them to mate up perfectly. It took two tries. For 48 Bones you have to heat them so they stay Cherry red after you take the torch away (takes a LOT of heat). After you cut the bones, wait until you are in the mock-up stage to bend them. The new angle of the bones will determine how much to bend them, and you won't know that until you get them in place. After your done, take them to an engine shop and have them magnifluxed to check for cracks. It's not all that hard, just a bit scary if you've not seen it done before.
Likewise, Fair or not, first impressions are made by the way we judge the title of a post and its spelling.
ChoptopT ..... no-one expects you to be perfect with your punctuation, we all make mistakes, but it would make your posts so much easier to read with the inclusion of the occasional full stop and capital letter. We try to encourage people who need our help, and the best way of doing that is by being helpful yourself. Pics are needed to ascertain your problem, and punctuation is needed to keep us willing to help. We only ream out people who have an attitude, or who are deliberately trying to stir us up. Remember, the average age here is well past the point of being willing to put up with smart-arse crap, but we're worth humoring because our collective knowledge of building tradtional hot rods is the largest and best in the world.
Just put a period or whatever you need where you naturally breathe and then hit "enter" to drop down a line. Start the next line with a Capitol letter. Not perfect...but easy to read! See...Just like you, the reader breathes when he sees the sentence end and to tell the truth...your making some of us turn blue !!! Just relax and give it a shot...you'll get it easy! A site called "Tinypic.com" is really easy to use for posting pictures too. It automaticly resizes the picture for you and all. Just do what it says on the page that comes up and "copy/paste" the "MESSAGE BOARD" pic address they provide. We'll help you out!
I'm in a similar situation - just getting ready to start a build. This is just my two cents worth, but here are a few things I am/would do. 1.) READ as much as you can, bathroom time or whatever, helps with the grammar stuff too. 2.) LOOK at as much stuff as you can - the pictures when you are reading. 3.) Go to as many carshows swapmeets, etc. as you can. While you are there, TALK to as many people you can about what they have built, and repeat number 2 - spend time looking UNDER other peoples cars, take pictures for reference, etc. I have been doing this since I decided to start my project. Last night at a show I ran into an old timer I met recently, I told him I had a few questions for him. After I asked my questions/ told him my thoughts, he said "You don't need to ask, you've already got it figured out, but let me know if I can help any time". I took that as a compliment. Numbers 1,2 and 3 are all related I suppose.
I am no English teacher or English major, but if I can't easily read a post, I just move on to the next post. I know there are several people on here who feel the same way. So, if you want good answers, make your thread easy to read by everyone, you never know who may have the answer you need, but won't read your post.
Aw, JC, that hurts. Anyway, I think the point has been made and it's not just me being pedantic. Others seem to agree. Of course, the main thing is that Choptop is starting to get some useful info. Still no pics? Pete
Just looked at your pics. Looks like a 40 axle and spring. If you want to use the spring in front set up then you can bend the spring perches out to realign them after you mount the bones to the frame rails, as described above. You don't need to go that way though. If you look at a lot of rods you'll see the spring monted over the axle. You just cut those perches off the front and buy a set of after market perch bolts ( attaches wishbone to axle ) with the spring mount integrated. This will mean buying a shorter spring too, but it might be a better way to go with your car otherwise your axle will be set too far back. You can get around that by moving the front crossmember forward. As you can see there are a lot of possibilities, none of them wrong, none of them all that difficult with some fabrication skills. You just need to look at a lot of cars and decide on a plan for YOU. Plenty of help and advice available. I think I even saw a full stop, so yep, you sure do seem to be a quick learner. BTW that chop on your sedan looks very tough. Pete
sorry if i caused any confusion. i wasnt sure how to post the pics on a thread i already posted. i see now. ill post them and from what you guys say is cut the perch off and mount new ones over the axle? if so i like that look. basically i wish one of you guys lived near by so you could slap me on the head and say "look dummy this is all you need to do" LOL. but really thanks for all the help.
