Might be talent, but that's all relative. CAD is the worst thing to happen to vehicle design ever. Take a look at the fender of an old Indian Chief, then look at a Polaris fender (I use the Polaris as an example because it was designed completely on CAD, start to finish) The constant-radius curve on the Polaris looks like shit- no "life" to it. A human hand never approached the Polaris- no one ever said, "Hey I could just change this curve a little bit and it would be...right" You guys with certain cars know what I mean- 36 three window...the evidence of a human hand, working on a big drafting tabe with an actual pencil, is everywhere on certain cars...and it's absent on others, like Audis, Aztecs, new Beetles...you can spot a CAD-designed vehicle a mile away. Come on man, modified bikes and hot rods are all about the LINE...and the LOOK... There's an art to it. CAD is SATANIC and like anything "easy", it isn't worth shit in the end. Ask one of the designer/artist/customizers on the HAMB- a good EYE and years of work and practice. KILL DESTROY DIE
An another thing, the HAMB is for TRADITIONAL rods, customs, a few bikes AND traditional building techniques Pick up a fuckin ol TRAD yellow pencil sometime...like the 32 roadster and the 67 Triumph Bonneville came out of Now I am all hetted up, as we say in Texas
FUCK IT!!! I WON'T SUPPORT SOMEONE FROM MY OWN COUNTRY QUICKLY, BUT THIS GUY IS DOIN' AN AWSOME JOB!! IT'S NOT ONLY CAD STUFF! "FD"
[ QUOTE ] CAD is the worst thing to happen to vehicle design ever. [/ QUOTE ] as a guy who makes a coin doing CAD work, i'm taking the other side... you think all cars drawn by hand look great? do you think all cars drawn in CAD look shit? hello!? you've just pulled out a couple of modern cars that most people would agree aren't great, and said "these are indicative of CAD designed cars", then pulled out one of the all time best shaped cars, the late 30's ford coupe, and said "this is indicative of all hand-drawn cars"... i'm sorry, but you're talking shit. for one, i don't believe any car in the world has ever started getting modeled in 3D until reams and reams of paper have been used for concept sketches. HAND concept sketches. can you seriously tell me that pininfarina should burn their copies of unigraphics, tell ferrari to junk the 360 modena, and go back to building mondiale's!? stop looking at the world through old-coloured glasses. CAD is (one of the things) that allows you to drive a car (as a daily, anyway) which is as reliable, fast, good looking, and cheap as your daily. and it's one of the MAJOR reasons car companies can make enough cars for everyone. CAD rules.
I was a little drunk last night... Haha... I said I won't support someone from my own country quickly (talking cars 'n bikes then). That's true. There's a lot of dorks and idiots in the car & bike scene here in my country, but that guy who does the DBBP website is a ruler!! Look around on that website.... The tech tips for example. And I defenitely recommend reading the article on the "Super Pan" bike. It was built by a friend of ours, here in Holland. You'll find it under the "cool bikes" section, then go to Pan Head pictures. It's divided in 4 parts. DEFENITELY CHECK THIS OUT!!! Maurice. Here's our man Ronnie, milling his Pan cylinder heads!! And he made a lot more stuff, all by himself! Finished product... Is this guy a ruler or what!!? Damned I'm gonna rate this stuff 5 starts!
One of the coolest bike shops in the world is in the Netherlands, good web site...the ABSAF company. Taken the old DBD Gold Stars and brought them into the modern world with no changes to their external appearance...big mains, magnesium cases, nicasil alloy barrels etc. 56hp from a pushrod single. Uh...I am sure they use CAD all the time (blush) but still basically the old pre war Goldie, drawn on a wood drafting table at Small Heath, Birmingham.
That's some amazing cad work on that site. There have been some interesting comments about Cad on both sides. Here's one of my CAD bikes, obviously not completed. It is true though, if you are using Cad, you gotta work at making the drawing look traditional.
