So I started thinking..... what can I do in 30 minutes. I ordered a large Pepperoni and cheese sticks and grabbed the jig....... Finished 5 minutes early So as I am sitting here enjoying my pizza, I wonder..... What can I do with this blank slate? I'm looking for interior ideas folks! Post what you've done with your door panels.
you beat me to it. Cover it in say, black vinyl, which I have alot of if you need some, and put the trim back on maybe
Had 30 more minutes..... I'm glad to finally be starting on the interior. Been wrenching for too long. I should turn this thing into an inside out woody. Just vinyl won't cut it, but any more ideas are very welcome.
Reminds me of the interior I did last spring. I make guitars and amps for a living and obviously I wanted a wood interior. Figured mahogany door skins with satin floor polyurethane. Matching grain along both sides. Made the handles out of walnut and the escutcheons from drawer knobs with the head cut off. Oil finished. All under $30. Goes well with the original wood grain dash.
Well if vinyl won't cut it, I guess covering it with carpet or cloth won't either. So what's that leave ya? You could paint it. You could spray it with glue then flock it with chicken feathers or model railroad grass. You could take a photo of the door's innards, have it printed life size on vinyl graphic paper, then apply to the luan. That'd really fuck with people. Speaking of, you could even add a gloryhole You could also make smaller pieces of luan that laid over the top as accent shapes (inlays). Cover the base with one material, and the second layer with another. Such as railroad grass over chicken feathers. good luck
Lol, thanks for the ideas. I used to own car audio stores and am a certified MECP installer so by trade interior auto is what I do (or did), but I don't just want to do the normal vinyl sheet and plastic screw in speaker pod thing that most cars get so I thought some here may have done something extra. At the moment I've been thinking of (one idea anyway) using the original steel trim strip to separate the top and bottom, then doing the bottom in grey vinyl and the top in stained wood. I can mold a speaker pod in fiberglass to the bottom if needed. I haven't checked out too much into my audio options yet, but the kick panels are pretty thin. I did the rears a few minutes ago.
Continuing, Polyfill keeps the edges from being harsh and creates a more 3d effect as it adds contour so after cutting the material and polyfill sheets to fit, simply stretch it around and tack it together. Then replace the mock up panels with the panels you have done the final cutting and fitting with. I'm going to embroider the chieftain indian into the kicks. I'll be adding this symbol.
Lookin good! FWIW Luan darkens with light exposure. So if you're gonna stain the top, make sure the pattern wood stays evenly covered or uncovered. Wouldn't be unheard of to come out with a shadow from a window crank if the unfinished wood rides in the car for a while. Happy upholstering
