purchased a 3 speed trans for bell. just curious what the trans might be. casting number is 3743368 - d149
sounds lke a truck transmission to me. where are the pic's? what are you planning on doing with it. how long is it? does it have provisions for trans mount?
If it is a side/collum shift it would be a Saganaw full syncro 3 speed. You could run it behind a warm 350 if ya don't beat on it too hard.
Not really sure what i'll do with. Just wanted the bell housing, flywheel , clutch and pressure plate that a guy had for sale. Basically the trans was a bonus.
non-synchro 1st gear. Short tail. It'll handle a mild small block, but I wouldn't want to try to put too much power power thru it... (it is not a Saginaw, they used the old non-synchro Muncies thru 66)
SOME RESEARCH I FOUND SAID THAT THESE TRANS WERE USED IN CORVETTES AND MATED WITH A 327 THAT PRODUCED 250 H.P AND 350 FT LB OF TORQUE. i'M PUTTING A 283 IN MY 49 TRUCK. WAS PLANNING ON USING A 3 SPEED SAG. THAT I HAVE LAYING AROUND. BUT MAYBE I'LL USE THIS INSTEAD. WANNA KEEP THE STOCK REAR IN THE TRUCK FOR LOOKS. NOW THE GEAR RATIOS FOR THE SAG IS 3.11-1.84-1.00. THIS NEW ****** IS 2.58-1.48-1.00. WOULD THIS BE BETTER FOR HIGHWAY SPEEDS THAN THE SAG. OTHER INFO I GOT SAID WITH THE SAG. MAYBE I COULD GET 55-60 ON HIGHWAY. ANY THOUGHTS?
Yup, high gear is the same with both transmissions. With the saginaw you'll be able to downshift into first without having to come to a full stop (or double clutch) like you would with the non-synchro trans. Saginaw should be longer too. Do you have a driveshaft already?
YEAH THE THE SAGINAW IS LONGER. ABOUT 3-4 INCHES FROM A SIDE BY SIDE COMPARISON. THERES A DRIVE SHAFT IN THE TRUCK. NOT SURE YET IF IT WILL WORK. I KNOW IT WILL NEED SHORTENED IF USING THE SAGINAW. BUT NOT SURE IF IT WILL BE USABLE. IN THESE TRUCKS THE DRIVE SHAFT AND REAR IS A CLOSED UNIT. I THINK I SHOULD JUST CHANGE REARS AND BE DONE WITH IT. HERE SOME PICS OF MY PROJECT. A FARMER RAN THIS TRUCK TILL 1993. THEN PUT OUT TO PASTURE TO DIE. I GOT ABOUT A 1 1/2 YEARS AGO. GOING TO TRY TO RESERECT.
If the rearend is the closed driveline type, then you'll need a different rear and driveshaft to work with either of those transmissions.
Yep Squirrel you right -me wrong on years used. Don't know what I was thinking er THINKING that was the prob. 49 Chevy :Use the Saganaw a lot tougher than the early box. Years ago had a 300 HP 327 in a 59 Vette and tied them things in knots, finally gave up and stuck a Munice in it. Matter of fact that that basic box dates back to 49 and my 261 Chev 6 blew up a bunch of them also.
kinda figured i had to change rears. i gotta ford 9 in laying around that i might throw under. thank for the info
if tou want to keep it 6-lug a 55-59 rear bolts in. checkout www.stovebolt.com all the info for your upgrades are there. killer truck site.
