First let me say I'm not trying to start a pissin' match,,,

The traditional side of me is to build my cars along the old styling cues that most of us like and I still do to this day,,,and I have shyed away from most of the modern advances in automotive technology.

Yet ol' guys like me that wouldn't even touch a computer or cared too until I was shown sites like the JJ and the Hamb and now I am hooked,,I'm a addict.

I have slowly slipped into the cyberspace age and can navigate the internet and have learned how to use the digital camera and post photos.

I have been informed ,,that I am going to have to step up to the plate and carry a device which I don't like, don't want and detest,,a friggin' cell phone.

How about you guys,,,has it been a easy transition for you? HRP

Speaking as someone who can barely type,I take heart in the fact there's always going to be a need for folks who can actually do stuff (like fabricating, etc.) Still trying to get the cyber stuff.Have to admit some of the ******* matches have entertainment value though.

    A cell phone isn't modern technology, it's a leash.

I am with Hugh, I most admire folks that can still do stuff. I make mandolins for a living, so I am a doer. Just wish I could work with metal like I can work with wood.

On the other hand, it sure helps to have a cell phone, digital camera, and internet access while running your own small business. Don't know how I would operate without it.

  5. Cell phones are handy. Look at all the HAMBers that have been helped out on the road with mechanicals because of their cell and this board!

The only time I carry mine is on a trip. I've made more cell phone calls in a flea market, locating my buddies, that any other place on earth. A few times on the road to find out what mile marker they are at.:D Mine is on the family plan and if I had to pay for it...I wouldn't!

I must say that I was never a shutter bug before digital. Too much of a h***le. The digital makes it so easy and fast that I got hooked.

My employer upgraded me to a blackberry this year. Now I am always at work. It ****s. I have to turn it off and risk missing family matters if I want any peace.

Don't do it! I wanna move to the boonies and live beyond the reach of anything but the pony express! They still do that?

Unlike some of you I like having the cell phone. I give the number to only people I want to have it. I use it as my tool not someone else's. Only family are allowed to call after nine o clock. That has the exception of in case a friend is in need of help. IMHO

Yea, technology can be daunting, but you don't have to be a slave to it. Cell phones come in handy and are worth their weight in gold when someone is in an emergency. Just don't use it for idle conversation like a lot of people I have seen. Computers are also here to stay. They have long ago moved from a novelty to a requirement of daily life. In todays word, knowledge is king and you can't beat having the word at your finger tips. However, if you're using it to keep tabs on a *** chat room or other ****, you may want to step outside for a while and meet new friends.

Yea, technology can seem like it's making you less human, but without it, we'd all be living in caves, trying to make speed parts for a damn rock wheel.

I hate cell phones but use it because of emergencies. I only turn the darn thing on when I'm away from home. What I don't understand, is why don't people use the message feature. It is soooo rude to interrupt a conversation because the person you are talking to, answers the phone. I was at a car show where one of the people in the group kept answering the cell phone. I finally asked him if he was so important, maybe he should plant himself somewhere else so it doesn't interrupt the conversation. He turned the phone off.

It doesn't help. I live on in the middle of nowhere, and we still have cable and phone reception here.

Somehow or another I've muddled through 58 yrs. without a cell phone, so I think I can make it the rest of the way without. Can't say that about the puter though, gotta have that!

Without the internet, it would have taken a lot longer and cost more to get my rides into the shape they are in today.
I found my coupe and all the parts entirely online.

I only use a pay-as-you-go cell phone and have a AAA plus membership for driving on the freeways, since the next closest town is 50 miles away.
Got a cd changer (which is already outdated nowadays) in the trunk for the longer rides.

I grew up with computers, but only use them if it makes my life easier but not for entertainment, like when I was a kid.

My favorite part about modern technology is that it can make life easier, more affordable and preserve and save lives.
My least favorite part is that it can also do the exact opposite.

As with everything, finding the right balance is key...

As someone who cheated to make it through typing cl*** in high school (I peeked at the keys!) and I swore I'd never get a computer, but I wouldn't be without one now. To me, life is all about learning and gaining more knowledge, and sharing it with others. Without the HAMB I never could have learned so much from Bruce Lancaster and the rest of you here, and I could have never contributed and shared what little I know. Without the computer, I couldn't have found some of the cars that I own, made new friends nationwide or traveled around the country to see them. Cell phones. satellite radios and GPS devices are lifesavers out on the road. Modern technology is just a tool to use, just like the tools in your tool box and garage. I like technolgy as long as I use it, but not if is using me. Don't give up that control.

If you really dislike technology, try giving up what we have gained by it in the last 100 years. I don't think you would enjoy it very long in that world and would be begging to come back. It's true that I would love to go back in time to the thirties, forties and fifties to experience that world again but I'm not sure I would stay there forever because our memory is selective and we tend to remember only the best things of those times.

Just be wise how you use it, and use it for good purposes to better yourself. If I want to go back to the days without it, I leave it at home and go for a ride back in 1934, when I get into my old '34 Ford Deluxe Coupe. It takes me there right away!

HRP ... you have known me for at least 25 years. I am a lot like you in the modern technlogy department. But when my Dad got real sick and he was 100 miles away ... I too started carrying a cell phone.

1 ) I do not make calls on it when driving
2 ) If I get a call ... I generally pull over to the side of the road ... if possible
3 ) Very few folks have my cell number ( I know you and Mrs HRP do :D )
4 ) Alltel seems to have the best all over coverage in our state ...
5 ) Try too get with the same company as your friends or family ... Because mobile to mobile minutes are free

It is like most anything else ... you can own it ... or you can let it own you ... your choice :D

Good point about it owning you. I was one of those stick-in-the-mud ***udgins that said I would never want a cell phone or a computer. So far Ive managed to do without the cell phone but take it on trips when I'm going to be away from the wife. I suppose it would be nice in an emergency, just haven't needed it yet. Now the computer is another animal. I SWORE I would never have one. After trying my wife's I got interested and now it's just a part of my day. The worse my knees get the more time I spend on it. As it's now scheduled I'm getting both of my knees replaced the 9th of Sept. We'll see if I can use my time more productively after I heal up and get back in shape. I'm NOT taking any bets.;):D

I have one of those prepaid cell phones,it's been lost somewhere in my junk for about two weeks. I'll find it eventually. my wife has one and likes all that text stuff, which I can't stand and try to avoid. I avoid using a cell phone while driving like the plague if i can help it, i had an old ****og phone in my car for years, was wired in, even though i had it set up hands free,i still pulled over to use it. as far as computers I think it's really helped the car hobby, it really brings people together with the same intrests. and i know i can't spell worth a dam. :D

I had the rear end of my 54 banged up from a woman jacking her jaws while using a cell phone in bumper to bumper traffic so yeah, I hate the damned things. That said, I do recognize the need for emergency calls so I bought one that costs me $5 per month from Virgin.

On the other hand, that GPS I bought comes in very handy. It's almost like having my ex beside me telling me how to drive but unlike her I can shut the GPS up with the push of a ****on. :D

I got into cell phones pretty early in the game, mainly because I was on the road a lot at the time. It didn't take long to find out that I didn't like being so "accessible".

As the popularity grew and the general public seemed to be droning around in pubic, hollering into cell phones and weaving around in traffic, I have become about as anti-cell as anyone. Actually, the danger and rudeness has become so pathetic that I am embarr***ed to be seen using one these days.

I had to make the personal policy that my cell phone is for my own convenience. I don't even turn it on unless I need to make a call. I do check my voicemail/email every few hours and return my calls. Yeah, there are people that get their ******* in a wad if they try more than 10 minutes to contact me. I'm sorry, but that's the best I can do and keep my sanity.

Strange, how things that were once only undreamt-of luxuries are now life and death necessities.

Im 20.... I was playing video games and using the internet while I was in elementary school.

I praise Al Gore for inventing the internet. I can now buy almost any part I need in under 20 clicks and 5 minutes.
